Ghana coverage: Glo partners with AirtelTigo in national roaming

Ghana’s telecom market has undergone several changes in recent years, following the privatisation of the incumbent telco Ghana Telecom and its rebranding as Vodafone Ghana. Two of the key players merged to form AirtelTigo in 2017, though in mid-2020 the parent companies of the operator decided to exit the market. ghana coverage

In a bid to provide wider coverage and a faster internet experience for its customers, network operator, Glo has entered into a nationwide National Roaming arrangement with AirtelTigo for voice, data and SMS services. ghana coverage

In this strategic business move with AirtelTigo, all Glo customers will automatically latch onto the AirtelTigo network by 23rd April 2022.

It is worth noting that all other conditions of service remain unchanged. This means Glo customers will continue to recharge with Glo’s scratch cards or electronic credit transfers and enjoy all existing Glo products including Value Added Services.

Glo customers who face any difficulty in automatically latching onto the AirtelTigo network are advised to manually select the AirtelTigo network in their phone/device’s network settings and enable Data Roaming, under Mobile Data Network Settings to enjoy a superior experience on the AirtelTigo network.

MTN Ghana has the biggest user base of internet users in Ghana, alongside the highest coverage of 4G in the country. Glo has three million customers in Ghana and there are five operators in the market.

In the mobile sector, MTN Ghana remains the dominant player. To address this, the regulator has imposed a number of measures since mid-2020 aimed at reducing the company’s market share and so improve the competitive environment.

Although LTE services are widely available, only MTN Ghana has thus far signalled a willingness to invest in 5G. This reticence is in part due to the existing potential of LTE and LTE-A networks, which are likely to be able to manage anticipated data traffic growth in the short term. The relatively high cost of 5G-compatible devices also inhibits most subscribers from migrating from 3G and LTE platforms.

The pandemic has had a noticeable effect on the m-money market, with the number and value of transactions having increased sharply since early 2020. ghana coverage
