Apple Pay to be available in Romania through ING Bank Romania, Banca Transilvania
BT Pay is the first electronic wallet to launch in January 2018. The app is available for both Android and Apple phone users. Currently, for Android payments, the NFC feature needs to be turned on, and for iPhone, it’s done via the BT Pay sticker, which can be ordered directly from the app, free of charge, after inserting a card.
The number of phone payments to merchants and money transfers between BT Pay users increased by 35% in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the previous quarter and transaction volumes increased by 50%, according to BT data, which did not give the figures.
According to a report by Statista from 2021, the estimated number of iPhone users in Romania was around 3.1 million in 2020, and this number was expected to increase to around 3.4 million by 2025. It is worth noting that this estimate includes all iPhone users, not just those who use Apple Pay.
