Telekom introduced VoLTE in Slovakia in April 2017. This service brings various advantagesie calling and surfing the 4G network at the same time, fast calls and better voice transmission compared to standard calls. VoLTE is also important because operators around the world are gradually shutting down 2G and 3G networks (for example the American AT&T). “After the pilot operation on the AT&T network, which took place from mid-April 2022, the support was extended to other countries. VoLTE roaming first started in this network, as the foreign operator turned off the 2G and 3G networks. In order for the customer to be able to call an operator without a 2G and 3G network, it is necessary to deploy VoLTE roaming for voice services and SMS,” said Telekom.

Telekom deployed VoLTE roaming in four countries. These are the USA (AT&T), Germany (Telekom), the Czech Republic (T-Mobile) and Greece (Cosmote). The operator expects the number of VoLTE partners to expand.

“It can be expected that other operators will gradually turn off 2G and 3G networks, and then VoLTE will remain an important form of connection in roaming,” he describes.

In order to be able to use VoLTE roaming, several requirements must be met:

• To have phone with VoLTE roaming support and updated firmware/software
• To have activated VoLTE service in your phone
• To have 4G SIM or eg together (like in Slovakia)
• be in 4G coverage of the partner network in the respective country

VoLTE roaming is officially available for dozens of models. More to come later:
