Rome activates 5G in 9 metro stations
The “Roma 5G” project has introduced the first 5G-enabled metro stations in Rome, providing passengers with access to 4G and 5G networks across major operators, including Fastweb-Vodafone, Iliad, TIM, and WindTre.
Thanks to INWIT and the connections of all mobile operators, 5G coverage arrives in the Rome metro. The inauguration held today in the Piazza Vittorio station was the first stage of the collaboration between Roma Capitale and Smart City Roma spa, the company controlled by INWIT that is implementing the Roma 5G project to accelerate the digital transition of the capital.
The stations involved in the first phase are the 9 Giubileo stations of Metro A for 7 km of line: Vittorio Emanuele, Cipro, Termini, Repubblica, Barberini, Spagna, Flaminio, Lepanto and Ottaviano. Citizens, tourists, and pilgrims arriving for the Jubilee will be able to use their smartphones, tablets, and PCs through the 4G and 5G connections of all mobile operators (Fastweb-Vodafone, iliad, TIM, and WINDTRE).
The operators’ signal will be available both inside the individual stations and while moving in the tunnels that connect them, thanks to INWIT’s multi-operator digital infrastructure for indoor DAS (Distributed Antenna System) stations.
Rome Metro 5G Expansion Kicks Off at Piazza Vittorio
The inauguration event of the Piazza Vittorio station was attended by the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, the CEO of TIM Pietro Labriola, the CEO of iliad Benedetto Levi, the Chief Technology Officer of WINDTRE Carlo Melis, the Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer of Fastweb+Vodafone Lisa Di Feliciantonio and the General Manager of INWIT Diego Galli.
Today’s is the first section of a larger project that plans to bring 5G with DAS technology to all 75 stations on the A, B, B1 and C metro lines by 2026, for a total of 1,170 remote stations between 4G and 5G, over 3,000 antennas and more than 250 km of new optical fiber, for a total section of 61 km.

The new Radio Equipment Room (BTS Hotel) of INWIT/Smart City Roma in the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele station, one of the largest and most advanced in Europe, will manage voice and data traffic in the Rome metro. The Room is a control and coordination point for the telecommunications equipment needed to enable connectivity for the operators Fastweb-Vodafone, iliad, TIM and WINDTRE.
The Mayor of Rome Capital, Roberto Gualtieri, commented: ”Rome is at the forefront of the world of Smart cities for a fundamental service such as 5G coverage. Today, we are activating this service in the first nine stations of line A, points of great flow and very frequented, which from today will be able to benefit from stable, simple, and fast connectivity. In June, we will complete the entire line A, by December the entire metro B, while by June 2026 line C will also be covered by the service. This same technology is already active in nine squares in Rome, with high-definition sensors and cameras; by the end of June 36 will be added and we will reach 100 by December. This is a great leap forward in the use of the most advanced technologies at the service of the community and demonstrates how collaboration between the public and private sectors can be useful for creating innovative infrastructures that are fundamental for the growth of Rome”.
Diego Galli, General Manager of INWIT, declared instead:
“We are happy to make our expertise available to support all mobile operators, alongside Rome Capital, in the efficient execution of the Rome 5G project. INWIT confirms its commitment to supporting the transformation of the Capital into an increasingly connected and intelligent smart city thanks to digital and shared infrastructures“.
“We are actively working on the deployment of Rome’s digital infrastructure because we want to be part of a tangible transformation process that improves the people’s daily lives. Technologies like 5G are essential tools for building cities that are more efficient, sustainable and capable of responding in real time to the needs of both residents and tourists. This is the power of public-private collaboration when the goals are clear”,
said TIM CEO Pietro Labriola.
At iliad, we continue to invest in expanding our widespread coverage and bringing innovation to areas where it’s needed most. With this in mind, we’re excited to collaborate with Rome’s local authority and take part in the Roma 5G project, taking a concrete step toward making innovation more accessible to everyone”,
said Benedetto Levi, CEO of Iliad.
“We are proud to have contributed to this effort to modernize the city. We took on the cost of building the infrastructure and the responsibility of helping design it because we have always been committed to continuously improving the connection service we offer our customers, ensuring they can talk, work and enjoy their free time while on the move, even when travelling underground in the capital”,
said Carlo Melis, Chief Technology Officer at WindTre.
The Rome 5G plan also includes the enabling of 5G connectivity for telecommunications operators in all the main nerve centers of the city, in addition to the activation of a large portfolio of digital services provided by Rome Capital in 100 squares, 98 neighboring streets and 7 public buildings of the Municipality of Rome (including the Campidoglio), through the installation of small cells based on the needs of the operators.
It also includes the installation of WI-FI in 100 squares, 2,000 cameras and approximately 1,800 IoT sensors. The goal is to offer the best connectivity and security to 3 million residents and over 15 million tourists, which will further grow in this jubilee year.
