Many subscribers received an SMS on Tuesday from the operator saying the amount was being deducted against international roaming rental for 30 days. But this message was sent even to those who had not subscribed to the roaming services. Consumers also complained that outgoing calls and data usage for affected users were automatically barred.

Several users expressed their angst on Twitter. @SnehilMoonat, said: “Vodafone is pain this days. Doing fraud by charging numerous customers with 99 rupee international roaming rental. @DoT_India. please look into this. Vodafone should be penalised. @TRAI. This is mental trauma to customers.”

I tried calling Vodafone customer care for help but all the numbers are invalid and WhatsApp help has some error,” said @jain_aarshi.

Vodafone Idea roaming refunds being made

While Vodafone Idea did not reply to an email query sent by BusinessLine, a source said: “Yes, several customers have received these messages. It is a technical glitch where an automated message is sent out regardless of whether or not the customer is travelling. However, it is being rectified and Vodafone Idea is refunding the money at the earliest.”

Value-Added Services like International roaming requires the consumer to use the MyVodafone app or SMS ACT IR to 144 or speak with customer care in order to provide consent. Well according to Vodafone Idea the pack cannot be activated if your account does not have sufficient balance, but some customers that had complained the local vendors said that their account balance has gone negative.

Well if your account balance gets negative in balance you won’t be able to call anyone even after the unlimited pack is activated.  In response to tweets, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said that the issue has been forwarded to the concerned TSP/division for necessary action.

As the customer care service has said that the deducted amount will be refunded in 24 hrs its nothing to panic about.

Sources said many users had been facing the issue from January onwards, and several of these complaints are still active.
