Vinaphone to deploy eSIM service in Vietnam

Vietnamese mobile operator VinaPhone has confirmed that it is working with technology partners to evaluate technical options for introducing eSIM services for its subscribers. The move signals growing interest in digital SIM technology in Vietnam’s mobile market.

More information about Vietnam eSIM offers is provided below.

At the time of the announcement, eSIM technology had already been launched in several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, India and Spain.

According to VinaPhone, Vietnam had not yet introduced commercial eSIM services from local mobile operators when the initiative was first announced. The company therefore began preparing infrastructure and customer onboarding processes ahead of a wider rollout.

From the end of January 2019, customers were able to pre-register for eSIM services through the dedicated website provided by the operator. Early registrants were promised priority access once the service became available.

Those who registered early were also expected to receive their eSIM profiles free of charge during the initial rollout phase.

At launch, eSIM support was limited to a small number of compatible smartphones. These included devices such as the Apple iPhone XS, Apple iPhone XS Max, and Apple iPhone XR, all of which require iOS 12.1 or later to activate eSIM functionality.

Meanwhile, rival operator Viettel announced that its first customers in 2019 would also be able to switch from a traditional physical SIM card to an eSIM at no cost. After the initial phase, the company planned to open the conversion service to the wider public.

Initially, Viettel provided eSIM activation exclusively through its retail stores, including locations that remained open during the Tet holiday period.

However, the company indicated that online activation would follow soon after launch. Once implemented, customers would be able to register for a new eSIM or convert their existing SIM remotely.

Instead of visiting a store to obtain a physical SIM card, users would receive a QR code linked to their phone number. After scanning the code with a smartphone camera or QR code reader, the eSIM profile would be downloaded and activated directly on the device.

This shift marks an important step in Vietnam’s transition toward digital connectivity solutions, as operators prepare for a future where physical SIM cards gradually give way to remote provisioning technologies.

Conclusion

Vietnam’s early steps toward eSIM adoption marked the beginning of a broader transformation in the country’s mobile connectivity landscape. What started as limited trials by operators such as VinaPhone and Viettel has gradually evolved into a wider shift toward digital SIM provisioning and remote activation.

For consumers, the biggest change is convenience. Instead of visiting a store, waiting for a physical SIM, or replacing lost cards, eSIM technology allows users to activate mobile plans instantly with a QR code. For operators, it reduces logistics costs and opens the door to new digital onboarding models.

More importantly, the rise of eSIM changes the competitive dynamics of the telecom market. Local operators are no longer competing only with each other. They are now part of a global connectivity ecosystem that includes travel eSIM providers, international MVNOs, and digital-first platforms offering instant mobile access across multiple countries.

For travelers visiting Vietnam, this means more options than ever before. Whether through local operators or international travel eSIM providers, staying connected is becoming faster, simpler, and increasingly flexible.

In many ways, Vietnam’s early eSIM rollout reflects a much bigger industry shift. The physical SIM card, which defined mobile connectivity for more than two decades, is slowly giving way to a fully digital model where mobile service can be downloaded as easily as an app. And as adoption continues to grow, Vietnam is likely to become another important market in the rapidly expanding global eSIM ecosystem.
