Telefonica says Oktoberfest data traffic up 50%

Telefonica Deutschland said data traffic on its O2 mobile network at Oktoberfest increased more than 50 percent this year, to 60 TB from 40 TB last year.

20 percent of all traffic is used by international visitors who roam the O 2 network. Those customers are mainly from Great Britain, Italy, and the USA.

For an excellent network experience during the Oktoberfest, Telefónica Deutschland supplied the site with 17 transmitting and receiving locations this year. The company fully exploited the available LTE spectrum in the O2 network and always provided its customers with sufficient capacity for high bandwidths, above all through the 2,600 MHz frequencies.

Carrier aggregation and the support of 256QAM modulation in the downlink often enabled peak data rates when using the O 2 network. In total, more than 80 percent of mobile traffic was handled via LTE (4G) .

The peak was on the last Saturday of the festival when more than 6 TB went over the network. The number of mobile phone calls also increased slightly, from 3.45 million in 2017 to 3.5 million, and the number of calls via Voice over LTE more than doubled.
More than half of all visitors (54 percent) made a pilgrimage directly from Munich to the festival tents. Strongly represented, however, was the rest of Bavaria. The Volksfest attracted an above-average number of visitors from the Bavarian communities of Hohenbrunn, Augsburg and Germering.
