PKO Bank Polski launches eSIM roaming service in app
PKO Bank Polski is now giving its customers a new way to stay connected on the go: you can buy and activate eSIM data plans directly inside the bank’s mobile app (IKO) and online banking platform (iPKO). The service, launched in January 2026, is built into the travel-oriented “Offer → Services & purchases → eSIM” section and works on compatible smartphones, tablets and wearables.
What sets this apart from traditional roaming is simplicity: you don’t need to hunt for a local SIM card after touchdown or pay steep roaming fees from your home operator. Instead, you select the region or country you’re traveling to, purchase a data pack, and install the eSIM profile over the air. Once you land and your device connects to a local network, internet access kicks in automatically.
Under the hood, the offering is powered by PKO Finat in cooperation with partners Autopay and Fonia Telecom by Fonia.Group, who handle the mobile data service and regulatory aspects.
How it works in practice
From the user’s point of view, the experience is clean and intuitive. In both IKO (mobile) and iPKO (web), you:
- Choose your destination — either a specific country (e.g. USA, Turcja, Wielka Brytania) or a broader region such as Europa, Azja i Pacyfik or global coverage.
- Pick a data plan — options typically range from small allowances like 1 GB up to 10 GB, plus some providers even offer unlimited plans.
- Buy and receive activation details — after payment the eSIM data and QR activation code are sent by email and visible inside the app.
- Activate on your device — scan the QR or enter activation codes manually. The service automatically connects abroad based on your selection.
Customers have six months from the purchase date to activate their eSIM, and the subscription starts when the device first connects abroad.
Why PKO’s eSIM matters
This launch ticks several boxes for modern travelers. First, it brings mobile connectivity into a mainstream banking ecosystem rather than through a telco or digital-only brand, something that not many traditional banks globally have done — let alone in Central and Eastern Europe. While fintech players like Revolut have offered eSIMs for a while, PKO’s solution stands out because it’s integrated into a widely used banking app trusted by over 12 million clients.
Second, it sidesteps expensive traditional roaming and the hassle of physical SIMs. That’s a notable advantage, especially for travel outside the EU — think USA, UK or Turkey — where EU roaming rules don’t apply and carriers often charge premium rates.
In terms of ease, the integration into IKO and iPKO means customers don’t need multiple apps or external accounts to manage data plans. This reduces friction and makes connectivity part of a single digital experience alongside banking, payments, and personal finance tools.
Pricing and reach (what we know so far)
PKO’s eSIM covers a mix of individual countries and regional packages (Europe, global, etc.) with data volumes from small to substantial. Independent reporting suggests pricing that’s competitive versus other eSIM providers and even against some telco-based roaming addons — for example, plans for the UK or Switzerland feature tiered GB options that undercut some bank and non-bank rivals.
Details about pricing vary by region and are published inside the app and iPKO service, but the core message is clear: it’s meant to be affordable and flexible for short trips or longer travels.
Customer experience and technical requirements
To use PKO’s eSIM, you need:
- A compatible device with eSIM support (most modern iPhone and Android flagships).
- To be an adult resident in Poland with a PESEL number.
Activation is straightforward: scan a provided QR code or manually input credentials in your device’s SIM/eSIM settings. The bank emphasizes convenience and safety, reflecting modern digital expectations.
Wider context: banks, eSIMs and connectivity trends
PKO’s move isn’t happening in isolation. In the wider market, several neobanks and fintech apps (e.g. Revolut, Wise) added eSIM services as part of travel or premium subscription bundles — a trend accelerated by the post-pandemic travel rebound. Many telecom operators also offer eSIM roaming addons, but these are typically tied to existing voice/data plans with domestic carriers and often priced higher outside bundled packages.
For traditional banks, deeper involvement in connectivity services remains relatively rare. There are isolated initiatives, such as certain banks partnering with MVNOs or digital connectivity platforms, but PKO’s integration directly into core banking UX is noteworthy. It signals banks are increasingly looking beyond pure finance into adjacent lifestyle services — a shift also seen in loyalty, insurance, travel and rewards features.
Industry research from sources like GSMA and telecom analysts highlights that eSIM adoption continues to grow globally, with carriers and digital players pushing embedded profiles for IoT, wearables and multi-profile user needs. In this context, PKO’s eSIM isn’t just another product — it’s part of a broader evolution where connectivity is treated as a service feature within non-telco ecosystems.
Conclusion: A strategic foothold in travel and connectivity
PKO Bank Polski’s eSIM rollout is more than a convenience for travelers — it’s a strategic extension of digital services into a space traditionally dominated by telcos and specialist apps. By combining mobile data plans with everyday banking tools in IKO and iPKO, PKO blurs the lines between financial and connectivity services in a way that could reshape customer expectations in Poland and potentially inspire similar offerings in other markets.
Compared to pure eSIM players, PKO’s offering stands out for trust, integration and simplicity, though specialist telco eSIMs may still offer broader global coverage or deeper customization for heavy users. What PKO has done well is lower the barrier to entry for average travelers who may not want to juggle multiple apps and accounts — and in doing so, it taps into a trend where connectivity is an essential utility, not just a telecom add-on.
For Alertify readers, this means paying attention to how traditional players leverage their platforms to compete with digital natives — not just in price, but in experience and reach. The eSIM space continues to evolve rapidly, and PKO’s initiative shows that even legacy institutions can be fast movers when they partner smartly and think customer-first.
