Mtel Montenegro introduces m:roaming data tickets
Mtel Montenegro has a very specific answer for one of the oldest mobile travel problems: what happens when postpaid users cross the border and forget that mobile data abroad can still hurt?
Its m:roming DATA tiketi are built around control rather than abundance. That matters. We are used to seeing tourist eSIM offers shouting about 50 GB, 100 GB or “unlimited” data, but classic roaming add-ons are a different product. They are not designed for streaming Netflix all week from a hotel room. They are designed to keep maps, messaging, email, ride-hailing apps and basic browsing alive without leaving the user exposed to unpredictable roaming charges.
According to earlier Mtel Montenegro announcements, the original structure was simple: 750 MB for 3 days at €5.90, 1.5 GB for 7 days at €11.90, and 3 GB for 15 days at €19.90. Mtel positioned these as data tickets for travel, activated before or during a trip, with the aim of helping users avoid unwanted roaming costs.
The offer has evolved
The interesting part is that Mtel’s current official DATA roaming add-on page shows a stronger structure than the earlier version. At the time of checking, the official page lists 1.5 GB for 3 days, 3 GB for 7 days, and 9 GB for 15 days, with the 15-day option priced at €19.90. The page also states that DATA tickets are intended for prepaid and postpaid users, both residential and business, and that unused resources can be combined if a new ticket is activated during the validity period.

That is a meaningful upgrade. The old 15-day ticket gave users 3 GB. The current official version lists 9 GB for the same 15-day window. For a traveller who uses WhatsApp, Google Maps, email and some social apps, 9 GB is far more realistic than 3 GB. It still is not a “work-from-anywhere and hotspot your laptop all day” product, but it does move the offer closer to how people actually travel now.
Activation is also fairly practical. Mtel says users can activate roaming data tickets through standard mobile channels, while the remaining data balance can be checked using the USSD code *108#. The older user-facing framing also referred to activation through the *105# menu, which fits the same low-friction roaming-control logic.
Why this matters now
Roaming is becoming less about raw price and more about guardrails. Mtel.ba, the sister company in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is moving in the same direction. From 1 February 2026, it says postpaid users will not have roaming data enabled automatically and will need an active Net roaming option to use mobile internet abroad. The stated logic is clearer control and fewer unwanted costs.
That trend is important. Operators are quietly shifting from “roaming is available, good luck” to “roaming must be actively chosen”. For consumers, that is less convenient in one sense, but much safer financially. For business users, it is even more relevant because uncontrolled roaming spend remains one of those annoying telecom costs that only gets noticed after the bill arrives.
Final take
Mtel Montenegro’s m:roming DATA tickets are not trying to compete with big tourist eSIM packages or local SIM offers. They sit in a different lane: familiar operator roaming, controlled validity, fixed data buckets and predictable pricing. Compared with travel eSIM brands, the allowances may look modest. Compared with old-school roaming, however, they are a much cleaner safety net. The broader market is moving toward exactly this: less automatic roaming, more opt-in control, and clearer data packages. That is not as flashy as “unlimited internet”, but for many postpaid users crossing borders, it may be the smarter product.
