LA Metro Enhances TAP Contactless Ticketing System with Fare Capping
LA Metro, serving the bustling city of Los Angeles, has introduced fare capping to its TAP transit ticketing system. This innovative feature ensures that passengers using contactless fare payments with their physical TAP transit card or mobile app won’t pay more than the cost of a daily or weekly pass, regardless of the number of journeys they undertake on any given day or within any seven-day period. Launched July 1, 2023, customers can now use their TAP card to pay per ride until they hit a daily fare cap of $5 or a seven-day fare cap of $18. Once the one-day and seven-day caps are reached, Metro riders will be able to use the system for free for the remainder of the day or seven-day period.
The Benefits of Fare Capping LA metro Contactless Ticketing
Previously, passengers using services operated by the 26 transit agencies supporting TAP in LA County had the option to purchase daily, weekly, or monthly passes in advance. With the introduction of fare capping, passengers can now add stored value to their TAP card or mobile app and pay as they go without needing to commit to purchasing a pass before they travel.
Fare Capping: A Cost-Effective Solution for Regular and Reduced Fare Passengers
The fare-capping service is a cost-effective solution for both regular fare passengers and those entitled to reduced fares, including senior citizens and people with disabilities. Regular fare passengers will pay no more than $5 a day and no more than $18 a week. Meanwhile, passengers with reduced fares will pay no more than $2.50 a day or $5 or $6 a week, respectively.
Streamlining Fare Payments and Simplifying Operations
“The all-in-one system and fare-capping ability streamlines fare payments for riders, simplifies operations for Metro, and consolidates the number of fare products needed to create a comprehensive rider experience,” says technology provider Cubic.
Fare capping arrives at an ideal time in Los Angeles, as the city prepares to host multiple mega events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics – each anticipated to draw millions of global citizens. Not only will the ability to pay contactless make the visiting rider experience easier – but fare capping will make transit the most affordable and sustainable option for attendees. This will help reduce congestion across the region during these historic, heavily attended events.

LA Metro began allowing passengers to add their TAP transit card to an Android NFC smartphone in February 2021 and to their iPhone or Apple Watch in September 2020.
