The US-based car manufacturing giant has filed to trademark the Modus Biometric System rolled out in the Chinese model with both the Mexican Institute for Industrial Property and the US Patent and Trademark Office, according to a GM Authority report.
As uncovered by GM Authority, General Motors recently filed to trademark “Modus Biometric System” in Mexico, following a similar trademark filing made to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last year.
The new filing was made on January 21st, 2021, and is tagged with application number 0119852485800. The filing was made to the Mexican Institute for Industrial Property, and per the Goods and Services category, it applies to “adaptive electronic systems for vehicles, sold as an integral part of a terrestrial motor vehicle,” per a GM Authority translation.
As the second related patent filing, the new filing in Mexico all but confirms that General Motors will offer a new facial recognition system in North America. GM already offers a facial recognition system with the 2021 Cadillac XT4 crossover in China, which serves as a keyless entry feature for easy vehicle ingress.
The system sold in China uses a high-definition binocular infrared camera, adaptive supplemental lighting, a touchscreen, and a fingerprint reader. When the user approaches the driver’s door, the system activates, scanning their face and unlocking the door if their face is recognized, while incorporating a fingerprint scan and a password as specified by the customer. The system can be configured for up to eight users.
Although GM has yet to confirm that it will offer a new facial recognition system in North America, it’s expected to launch the new “Modus” system with the 2022 or 2023 Cadillac XT4, possibly in conjunction with a model refresh. car face recognition
