Eurail passes go digital in Italy
After a successful pilot in June, the new “Mobile Italy Pass” is now available via the Eurail and Interrail webshops. Trenitalia is the first of the participating carriers in the Eurail and Interrail scheme whose rail services will be available via a new digital solution – the first, all-in-one mobile pass that travelers can conveniently access via the dedicated Rail Planner App. Read more about Eurail Passes Italy below.
Eurail and Interrail Pass holders will now be able to easily manage all the trips connected to their Pass from mobile devices, while so far this had to be done manually via a paper travel diary to be compiled by the traveler prior to each trip.
To validate the Pass, ticket inspectors can scan the barcode presented in the app. To reduce the risk of fraud or falsification, the Pass also contains visual validation security elements for ticket inspectors. Comprehensive training for ticket inspectors and successful field testing took place both online and on board of Trenitalia trains in June, after Covid-19 lockdown measures were eased and train travel was made possible again.
Carlo Boselli, General Manager at Eurail: “I could not be prouder of this milestone. Trenitalia was among the first European carriers to introduce e-ticketing for their national services years ago. They were also the first carrier to make seat reservations digitally available for our customers in the Rail Planner app. I look forward to extending this project with other carriers later this year.”
The launch of the mobile Pass for Italy is the first step in the roll-out of a digitization project of Eurail that connects more than 35 participating carriers across Europe in one flexible travel offer. The objective of this project is to have a centralized distribution system and to take away the need for paper tickets. The entire Eurail community will benefit from the new digital platform
The new Italy Mobile Pass is currently exclusively available at the Eurail and Interrail webshops. The mobile version of the multi-country Global Passes and more One Country Passes will follow later this year.
