Three UK is investing £100 million to boost 5G and improve 4G

Three has announced that it has entered into a £100 million infrastructure investment agreement with SSE Enterprise Telecoms (one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers), that will see the latter upgrade Three’s fibre optic capacity in 250 UK towns and cities, leading to improvements in Three’s 4G and 5G services. Three intends to deliver the UK’s fastest 5G network, and this investment should help with that, as well as providing increased capacity and reliability on Three’s 4G service. So whatever kind of data you’re connected to you should get the best experience possible.

As part of the deal, SEE Enterprise Telecoms will deliver over 450 unbundled BT Exchanges across the UK by the middle of 2021. This will result in SEE Enterprise Telecoms’ fibre network stretching across over 30,000km, up from 20,000km currently, and by linking the associated fibre connectivity into Three UK’s network it will provide “a unique high capacity and resilient network for all of Three UK’s customers”.

Susan Buttsworth, Chief Operating Officer at Three UK said: “We are investing significantly to transform our entire network experience which will support our customers who use three times more data than the average UK consumer. SSE Enterprise Telecoms will help support our goal of delivering a great 4G and 5G experience across the UK.”

Essential extra capacity

Given the massive amount of data that Three’s customers use – and the fact that this will only grow as 5G becomes more widely available – it’s essential that Three has the reliability and capacity to cope, which is what these infrastructure investments will ensure.

And this is just the latest in a string of upgrade works that SEE Enterprise Telecoms has done for Three, as the latter previously connected many of Three’s London cell sites and masts to fibre, and launched a fibre test zone for Three in London’s West End.

Three has also made similar deals with CityFibre, while other networks are also working on various infrastructure upgrades. three uk 5g
