The goal is to abolish roaming charges by 2021, said the participants of the second round of negotiations on the new Regional Roaming Agreement for the Western Balkans, organised in Brussels by the RCC.

RCC Secretary General Majlinda Bregu stressed that it is in the interest of the economies, citizens and the politicians to finalise as soon as possible the Regional Roaming Agreement that will additionally reduce the roaming costs by July 2019, leading the path of ‘Roam Like At Home’ and zero roaming cost in 2021,” the RCC said in a statement.

“If we want people to understand the real impact of our efforts in promoting the regional cooperation, let’s sign this agreement in April. This is the logic of Europe’s borderless single market that was created more than 50 years ago and this should be a tangible result of the RCC,” she was quoted as saying.

The abolition of roaming charges in the Balkans region is expected to have several significant benefits:

  1. Improved communication: The abolition of roaming charges will make it easier and more affordable for citizens of the six Balkan countries to communicate with each other, whether for personal or business purposes.
  2. Increased tourism: Lower roaming charges are likely to encourage more tourists to visit the region, boosting the local economy.
  3. Enhanced trade: Lower communication costs can help facilitate trade and commerce between the six Balkan countries, potentially leading to increased economic growth.
  4. Strengthened regional ties: The abolition of roaming charges can help to promote greater regional cooperation and understanding among the six Balkan countries, potentially leading to greater political stability.

Overall, the abolition of roaming charges in the Balkans region is a significant step towards greater regional integration and connectivity. It has the potential to improve communication, boost tourism and trade, and strengthen regional ties, ultimately benefiting the citizens of all six countries.
