IIJ’s Unlimited Japan SIM Targets Incoming Travelers
Japan’s prepaid connectivity market has a new in-store option for visitors who want more data headroom than the usual tourist SIM.
Internet Initiative Japan, better known as IIJ, has launched Japan Travel SIM Unlimited for BIC SIM, a data-only prepaid nanoSIM for people staying in Japan temporarily. Sales begin on June 17, 2026, with a gradual rollout through BIC Camera Group stores and online shops, including BIC Camera, Kojima and Sofmap.
The pitch is simple: unlimited data, 5G support and quick activation without online registration. For travellers who land in Japan and immediately need maps, translation, ride-hailing, hotel messaging, train apps and video calls, that matters. Japan is one of those destinations where mobile data becomes part of the travel infrastructure.
Why this launch makes sense now
Japan’s inbound tourism story is still huge. JNTO data shows millions of international visitors arriving every month, and that changes what tourists expect from mobile service. They are uploading reels, joining work calls, navigating rail transfers, booking restaurants and using translation apps in real time.
That is the pressure point IIJ is addressing. Its existing Japan Travel SIM lineup already covered fixed data options, but “unlimited” is a more comfortable word for visitors who do not want to calculate gigabytes between Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or Hokkaido.
There is also a retail logic here. BIC Camera is already a familiar stop for visitors buying electronics, chargers and travel adapters. Adding an unlimited prepaid SIM there makes sense because the customer is already in problem-solving mode.
What travellers actually get
The new SIM works across Japan in areas covered by au 5G or 4G LTE. It comes in three usage periods: 10 days, 15 days and 31 days. The SIM type is nanoSIM, and supported languages include Japanese, English and Simplified Chinese.
The practical advantage is that travellers can start using it by inserting the SIM into an unlocked compatible device. That is useful for arrivals who did not buy connectivity before the trip, or for anyone whose travel SIM, roaming allowance or portable Wi-Fi plan runs out mid-stay.

But “unlimited” deserves a closer look. IIJ notes that speeds may be restricted during congestion or heavy data use. High-speed tethering is also capped: 9GB on the 10-day plan, 14GB on the 15-day plan and 30GB on the 31-day plan. After that, tethering speed can fall to 128kbps. So this is not a replacement for a remote-work hotspot setup.
Where it fits in the market
This launch moves in the opposite direction from the broader eSIM narrative. GSMA Intelligence has been tracking growing consumer eSIM adoption, and travel eSIMs have become one of the clearest consumer use cases. For Japan, many visitors will still compare app-based eSIM options before departure.
IIJ is not ignoring that shift. The company already introduced Japan Travel SIM/Digital, an eSIM option sold through MINISTOP Loppi terminals, with data plans from 3GB to 55GB. But this BIC SIM product targets a different behaviour: the traveller who wants something physical, in a trusted Japanese retail chain, without creating an account or completing a longer activation flow.
That segment still exists. Not every traveller wants another app. Not every phone supports eSIM. Some visitors also prefer the reassurance of holding a SIM card, especially when store staff are nearby.
The small print matters
The product is data-only, so there are no voice calls or SMS. That is fine for travellers living inside WhatsApp, Line, iMessage, FaceTime, Google Maps and hotel apps. It is less ideal for visitors who need a local number, SMS verification or traditional calling.

It also requires an unlocked device with nanoSIM support. That excludes newer eSIM-only phones. Some devices may require APN settings, which is not difficult, but it is not a zero setup.
Pricing is listed as open pricing, so the final retail price may vary. That makes value harder to judge until shoppers see the shelf price or online listing.
Final take
IIJ’s Japan Travel SIM Unlimited for BIC SIM is not trying to beat every travel eSIM app on elegance. It wins on something more old-school: availability, simplicity and trust at the point of need.
For light travellers, a smaller eSIM plan bought before departure may be cleaner. For heavy hotspot users, the tethering cap is the detail to watch. But for visitors already in Japan who want a physical SIM with generous phone data and 5G access, this is a smart retail-first move.
Japan’s visitor connectivity market is no longer just about “getting online.” It is splitting into pre-trip eSIM buyers, airport Wi-Fi renters, retail SIM shoppers and business travellers who need reliable backup data. IIJ’s new unlimited BIC SIM sits neatly in that middle ground, where convenience still beats pure digital minimalism.
