Iliad has built a strong reputation in Italy for simple mobile offers, aggressive prices and big data bundles. That is why many travellers assume roaming will be just as simple. You see 150GB, 250GB, 300GB or even 350GB on the offer page, and your brain quietly says: fine, I am covered.

This year, unlike the previous one, iliad has decided to play in advance and has already updated on the Contract Summary documents the quantities of GB provided for in Roaming in the EU (for each individual offer) calculated on the new limits established by the European Union legislation starting from 1 January 2021. iliad roaming 2021

As is known,  iliad allows you to use minutes and SMS from your offer without limitations when roaming in the EU . With regard to data traffic, each mobile operator can apply a safeguard limit (correct use) in order to prevent abusive or anomalous use of the services. This limit can be calculated with the following formula:

2 * package price (without VAT) / the ceiling for wholesale prices (this year equal to 3.50 euros). From 1 January 2021 this ceiling drops to 3 euros (and from 1 January 2022 to 2.50 euros, always excluding VAT).

This means a greater amount of GB available for roaming.

In the following table, we have listed the iliad offers with data traffic included (even those no longer marketed), reporting the minimum quantity of GB guaranteed by the current European legislation, the thresholds applied by iliad in 2020 and those foreseen for 2021.

The extra-threshold tariff also changes for data traffic that can be used in the EU. Once the quantity made available each month has been exceeded (as shown in the table), iliad customers will no longer pay 0.00427 euros per MB but 0.00366 euros per MB.

For those who still have the first offer marketed by iliad active at the launch of the service (iliad 5.99), with this new modification, they will be able to enjoy a greater amount of data traffic in Roaming in the EU, at an unchanged price.

Who Iliad roaming works best for

Iliad roaming makes the most sense for Italian residents who use their SIM mostly at home and travel around Europe occasionally. In that context, the value is strong. You keep your number, your plan continues working, and the dedicated European data threshold is enough for many normal trips.

It is also good for travellers who understand their usage. If you know that you use 1GB to 2GB per day while travelling, you can estimate whether 12GB, 23GB, 25GB or 30GB will cover your trip.

Where it becomes less ideal is long, data-heavy travel. Digital nomads, business travellers using a hotspot every day, families sharing one connection, and creators uploading videos should be more careful. For them, a roaming threshold is not a small detail. It is the whole product.

Where travel eSIMs still fit

This is where travel eSIM providers remain relevant. They are built around the travel use case. You buy data for a destination or region, you know the allowance upfront, and you can keep it separate from your main SIM.

For an Iliad customer, that does not mean replacing Iliad. It may simply mean using Iliad for calls, SMS, WhatsApp continuity and light roaming, then adding a travel eSIM when the trip is longer or more data-heavy.
