New York City subway map to paid homage to some of the city’s great women

The map was originally part of their book “Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas,” but they’ve now done an updated version that’s currently for sale at the New York Transit Museum. In this revamp, they’ve assigned a woman to all 424 subway stations and have added 80 names, including Cardi B and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. New York City subway map

When it was first published in 2016, Solnit said that the map was inspired by the following questions: How does it impact our imaginations that so many places in so many cities are named after men and so few after women? What kind of silence arises in places that so seldom speak of and to women?

The 2019 version still reckons with the same questions. It also reflects the growth of New York’s real subway system (such as the extension of the 7 line to Hudson Yards), adding 80 names of notable female figures to represent the city’s 424 current underground stations.

According to its creators, the illustration “pays homage to some of the great and significant women of New York City in the places where they lived, worked, competed, went to school, danced, painted, wrote, rebelled, organized, philosophized, taught, and made names for themselves. The map includes sites marked for Nora Ephron, Yoko Ono, Barbra Streisand, Susan Sontag, and Grace Jones, as well as newer “NYC icons”—among them Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Cardi B.

City of Women 2.0” is currently on view at the New York Transit Museum as part of the Navigating New York exhibit (at the museum’s Downtown Brooklyn location), which runs through January 2020. A version of the “City of Women” poster is also available online. New York City subway map

New York City subway

The New York City subway is one of the largest and busiest public transit systems in the world, serving millions of riders daily. It operates 24/7 and spans four boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The subway system consists of 472 stations and is divided into several lines identified by letters and numbers.

Key Features:
  • Lines and Routes: The subway has 27 lines, including numbered lines (1, 2, 3, etc.) and lettered lines (A, B, C, etc.), each serving different neighborhoods and areas.
  • Fares: The standard fare is $2.90 for a one-way trip, with discounts available through the MTA’s MetroCard or OMNY contactless payment system.
  • Accessibility: Not all stations are fully accessible, but efforts are ongoing to make more stations wheelchair accessible.
  • Hours: The subway operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but some routes have limited service during off-peak hours.

If you’re planning to navigate the NYC subway, it’s helpful to use maps or apps for real-time service updates and to plan your routes.
