Speculations Surround Google’s Pixel 8 Series: A Potential Shift towards eSIM?

The forthcoming Google Pixel 8 series has been at the heart of multiple leaks, most of which predict anticipated upgrades. However, a new rumor suggests Google may be planning a significant change with the upcoming smartphone range.

SIM card e SIM shop

Following Apple’s iPhone 14 series, the Pixel 8 series might be the next to completely abandon physical SIM card slots.

Could Pixel 8 be exclusively eSIM?

According to renowned Android researcher Mishaal Rahman, Google could launch the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro as eSIM-only devices in some markets, if not globally. His conjecture is based on Pixel 8 series renders leaked earlier this year, which surprisingly do not depict any SIM card slot on the smartphone.

Rahman points out that renders associated with the previous generation of Pixel smartphones, including the Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 series, displayed a physical SIM card slot on the left side. This includes the Pixel 7a and Pixel 6a models as well. Therefore, he believes this absence is unlikely to be an accidental oversight.

Render Accuracy and Interpretations

Rahman also conversed with OnLeaks, the informant who produced and disseminated the Pixel 8 series renders in collaboration with partner publications. OnLeaks stated that while renders are generally precise, they can occasionally miss some details and advised against making premature assumptions. It’s noteworthy that SmartPrix, the publisher behind the Pixel 8 Pro renders, does mention a SIM card slot in their interpretation. However, OnLeaks clarified that this detail was not shared by him and is purely SmartPrix’s interpretation of the renders.

Adding to this, Rahman mentioned that a leaked video of the Pixel 8 Pro did briefly reveal a physical SIM card slot on the left side. This suggests either the Pixel 8 series renders are incorrect or Google is considering abandoning physical SIM card slots in certain markets. Overall, these are speculations at present, and it would be wise to wait for more definitive evidence before reacting to this potential change.

eSIM-Only Pixel 8 Series: A Feasible Idea?

The idea of an eSIM-only Pixel 8 series isn’t entirely far-fetched. Apple has already implemented this with the iPhone 14 series in the United States, and Android brands often follow suit fairly quickly. It’s plausible that Google might adopt a similar approach, at least in the United States, if not in more markets.

Google has confirmed its work on a new Android feature aimed at streamlining eSIM transfers. A recent leak demonstrating how this feature would operate has emerged. The feature would be available during the initial phone setup, where users would need to scan a QR code from an older device with an installed eSIM profile. This feature is expected to debut on the Pixel 8 series before rolling out to other Android devices.

Final Thoughts

In the rapidly evolving world of technology, it’s important to remember that rumors and leaks, while often accurate, should be taken with a grain of salt until officially confirmed by the company. If Google does decide to move forward with an eSIM-only model for the Pixel 8 series, it would mark a significant shift in smartphone design and functionality.

This change could have several potential benefits for users, including increased convenience and flexibility, as well as the elimination of the need for physical SIM cards. However, it’s also crucial to consider potential drawbacks. For instance, not all carriers globally support eSIM technology, and switching between carriers could become more complicated without a physical SIM card.

Ultimately, whether this potential shift towards eSIM technology is a positive or negative change will largely depend on individual user needs and the infrastructure available in their specific region. As always, consumers should carefully consider these factors when choosing a new device.
