Idemia, the European smartcard business formed from Safran and Obertur, has had its first 5G eSIM based on a security chip from Infineon approved by the GSMA. esim for vehicles

The Dakota v3.4 NG (New Generation) eSIM is optimised for the automotive market to allow real-time enhanced telematics services, driver assistance features, V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communications and SOTA (Software-over-the-air) updates with maximum reliability, security and privacy. It can also be used for 5G wireless connectivity in the Internet of Things (IoT).

Connected cars are expected to account for over 90% of car sales by 2024 using eSIMs as the preferred connectivity technology. The GSM Association (GSMA) has developed a compliance framework to support this growth and to ensure that eSIMs are functionally interoperable and provide state-of-the-art security.

The Dakota v3.4 NG eSIM that runs on Infineon’s new SLI37 chip complies with the latest GSMA specifications and is 5G-ready. This eSIM is the first of its kind in the world to be GSMA approved under their current compliance process. An independent laboratory has assessed DAKOTA v3.4 NG to ensure its design complies with GSMA’s security rules.

Infineon’s SLI37 meets 5G’s high-performance eSIM requirements with CCEAL 6+ security certification. This provides private data security for drivers while enhancing protection against call interceptions, fraud, and location tracking. An OS update feature allows secure remote management of the eSIM operating system.

Cars with the Dakota v3.4 NG are expected to roll off the production line in 2022 and can also be used to connect IoT devices as 5G comes on stream.

“We are thrilled that GSMA has approved our next generation 5G eSIM based on Infineon’s latest platform optimized for automotive applications. We are top carmakers’ partner of choice and more than 15 million cars on the road have our products built in. The unrivaled features of our future-proof eSIM will give them a vast array of enhanced services,” said Yves Portalier, IDEMIA Executive VP Biometric Devices & Automotive.

“As the leading longstanding microelectronics supplier to the automotive market, we are now bringing secured 5G cellular connectivity to today’s cars. We offer best-in-class quality with our SLI product families. For example, SLI37, the next-generation automotive security controller, goes a step further in terms of robustness, performance, and quality. Our cooperation with IDEMIA and the GSMA approval set an important milestone in building the trust necessary for the mass uptake of connected car technologies,” said Benoit Rousseau, Infineon Vice President, Head of IoT Security. esim for vehicles
