Giving newspersons an update on activities in the circle on Friday, Mathew said here that the BSNL has also set up an international gateway router at Ernakulam to handle the increasing data traffic in Kerala.
BSNL Kerala is a major player in deployment of WiFi hotspots, having installed and is maintaining over 600 hotspots with 2,100 access points, he added.
At least 450 USO-funded hotspots are operational in rural exchanges. Another 620 would be set up in rural exchanges. At least 172 with ‘mobile data offload’ feature are operating in main tourist locations and government guest houses.
The Kerala circle is planning to roll out Fibre-to-Home (FTTH) service using technology capable of providing up to 100 Mbps of internet facility to home customers at all exchanges in the state, Mathew said.
In this connection, installation charges stands waived off for all new landline, broadband and FTTH customers. During this financial year, 24 lakh new mobile, 1.8 lakh landline, two lakh broadband and 30,000 FTTH connections are proposed to be installed.
