O2 Spain launches eSIM service

Telefonica’s new O2 brand in Spain has followed in the footsteps of its parent company by rolling out an embedded SIM card (eSIM) service. o2 eSIM

The technology is initially available on the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR smartphones, as well as the iPad Pro, with customers simply asked for ID details to verify the ownership of the line before being sent all the necessary data for the eSIM activation, including the corresponding PIN, PUK and QR code.

The O2 eSIM can be requested by both current and new customers.

The steps to follow to activate it are the following: o2 eSIM

  1. Go to Settings> Mobile Data> Add mobile data plan.
  2. Choose “Add mobile data plan.”
  3. The mobile camera will open and you will have to focus it on the QR code attached to the mail.
  4. Restart the mobile, and you’re done.
The advantage of the eSIM is that, if you have a compatible device, you can have two lines of minutes, messages and mobile data without the need to enter a physical card. It is what happens in the case of the iPhone. The SIM card is configured directly from the settings; it is not necessary to do anything else.

Spain & eSIM

In addition to the new eSIM offering from O2 Spain, the Spanish market already features a growing ecosystem of specialist eSIM providers offering flexible data plans tailored both for visitors and longer-stay users. For example, Ubigi provides fast 4G/5G access across major Spanish networks and has travel-friendly plans from as little as 10 GB for around US $12.
Meanwhile, Spain-founded Holafly specializes in unlimited-data eSIM plans in Spain and Europe, delivered through top-tier national networks and set up via QR code in minutes. And providers like Airalo and Jetpac round out the market with value-oriented data-only options that plug into multiple Spanish networks (Orange, Vodafone, and Yoigo) and are ideal for short stays or digital nomads.
Together, these options give both travelers and business users in Spain a lot of flexibility—whether you want short-term data while hopping between cities or a full dual-line setup with local and roaming support via your main Spanish operator.
