Holidaymakers, business travellers and businesses at five of the UK’s largest airports are starting to enjoy faster and more reliable mobile data, thanks to the arrival of Vodafone 5G. UK airports

Installed by Exchange Communications, the technology is now live across George Best Airport in Belfast and Newcastle International Airport. Meanwhile, dedicated 5G systems are also being installed in Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports.

With its much higher speeds, 5G is perfect for travellers wanting to download the latest movies and box sets. Its lower latency, meaning the time it takes it to connect, makes accessing work documents and remote servers while waiting for a flight much quicker. Meanwhile, 5G’s ability to offer far greater capacity means that many more people can enjoy a reliable signal, no matter how busy and crowded the terminals get.

5G can also help businesses across the airport in a range of areas, such as real-time inventories and smart carts where customers no longer need to scan their purchases at checkout. And the technology also has the potential to support a range of the latest airport services including contactless check-in and digital passport controls. Andrea Dona, UK Network and Development Director atVodafone, said:
“Millions of passengers use these airports every year, so we’re delighted to be able to give them fast data speeds, however busy it gets. Meanwhile, each of these airports has an important role to play in their region and their local economy. So it’s great to be able to supply the connectivity they need to continue to grow and succeed.”Tom Sime, CEO at Exchange Communications, said: “The airports are a pivotal part of the economy supporting an ecosystem of companies employing thousands of people. The deployment of 5G will both futureproof the airport’s connectivity and enable new services which will support the airport, its customers, and those businesses. The airports will be the UK’s most connected companies. UK airports 5g

Here’s a breakdown of its key importance

Enhanced Passenger Experience
  • Faster and more reliable connectivity: 5G’s high speed and low latency enable seamless internet access for passengers, allowing them to stream videos, work, or simply browse the web without interruption.
  • Improved passenger processing: Biometric identification, self-service kiosks, and automated passport control can be accelerated with 5G, reducing wait times and creating a smoother journey.
  • Personalized services: Airports can leverage 5G to offer tailored services based on passenger preferences, such as personalized shopping recommendations or flight information.
  • Touchless interactions: In the post-pandemic era, 5G facilitates contactless interactions, reducing physical touchpoints and enhancing safety.
Operational Efficiency UK airports 5g
  • Improved airport operations: 5G can optimize airport operations through real-time data analysis, enabling better resource allocation, baggage handling, and flight management.
  • Autonomous vehicles: Airports can utilize 5G for the safe operation of autonomous vehicles, such as baggage carts and cleaning robots, increasing efficiency and reducing labor costs.
  • Enhanced security: High-definition surveillance, facial recognition, and AI-powered security systems can be supported by 5G, improving overall airport security.
  • Predictive maintenance: By collecting data from various airport equipment, 5G can enable predictive maintenance, reducing downtime and optimizing maintenance schedules.
