MEO First in Portugal with Google Certification for Direct SIM-to-eSIM Transfer

MEO has become the first operator in Portugal certified by Google to allow the transfer of a physical SIM card to a digital eSIM on Android devices, directly and autonomously, without the need to read a QR code or contact customer support.

The eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that eliminates the need for a physical card, facilitating easier management of mobile plans and supporting multiple numbers on a single device. MEO offers this digital SIM option at no additional cost for activation or switching, making the transition seamless for existing customers.

This innovation is available for Android devices with version 15 or higher and represents a significant advance in the digitalization of mobile services.

We are extremely proud to be the first operator in Portugal to offer this innovative feature, which reinforces our commitment to offering the best user experience and leading the digital transformation in the country, with what we call useful innovation, as it adds value to customers”, he says. The conversion of physical SIM to eSIM on Android devices, without the need to read a QR Code, represents a crucial step in simplifying the experience for our customers.

Carlos Bouça, MEO Engineering and Operations Director

To convert a physical SIM to an eSIM on compatible Android devices, users can follow these general steps:
  1. Open the device’s Settings app.
  2. Navigate to ‘Network & Internet’ or ‘Connections.’
  3. Select ‘SIMs’ or ‘SIM card manager.’
  4. Choose the SIM you wish to convert.
  5. Look for the option labeled ‘Convert to eSIM’ and follow the on-screen instructions.

It’s important to note that the availability of the ‘Convert to eSIM’ option may vary depending on the device model and carrier support. For instance, Samsung Galaxy devices offer an ‘eSIM Simple Setup’ feature that simplifies this process.

Users should ensure their device is compatible with eSIM technology and that their carrier supports eSIM services. For detailed instructions tailored to specific devices or further assistance, contacting MEO’s customer support or visiting their official website is recommended.

MEO: History of innovation in eSIM

MEO had already introduced, in June 2023, the conversion of the physical card to eSIM through the myMEO customer area via QR code. In September 2024, it pioneered the launch of the “Quick Transfer” functionality for Apple devices. Now, MEO is expanding this functionality to Android devices, starting with Samsung and Google models.

This development is part of the global trend toward digitalization and reinforces MEO’s commitment to increasingly intuitive and convenient solutions for its customers.
