The end of roaming between Chile and Argentina is already getting closer and closer to being a reality. This Thursday, the representatives of the governments of both countries gave the go to the final stage of work to finalize this milestone in 2019.
The appointment was headed by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications of Chile, Pamela Gidi, along with Silvana Giudici, vice president of the National Communications Agency (Enacom) of Argentina, and the Secretary of Information Technologies and Communications of that country, Héctor Huici.
“Today, the governments of Argentina and Chile have taken an important step towards bilateral and regional economic integration that will allow us to advance in the elimination of international roaming in 2019. Our Region needs to boost its digital economy and narrow the gap with the most developed countries” , said the Undersecretary of Telecommunications of Chile, Pamela Gidi.
The elimination of roaming between both countries must be ratified by the parliaments of Chile and Argentina. Once this step is completed, a period of one year will start for the measure to become effective.
Chile & Argentina roaming markets
The roaming markets in ChiIe and Argentina differ in terms of regulation and pricing. In Chile, mobile operators are regulated by the Subsecretaría de Telecomunicaciones (SUBTEL), which has implemented measures to promote competition and prevent anti-competitive behavior. Roaming rates in Chile are generally lower than in Argentina, and mobile operators offer a range of roaming packages for customers. In contrast, Argentina has historically had higher roaming rates and less regulation in the market, although recent reforms have aimed to address this and improve competition among operators.
