The initiative is part of EU’s 5G Action Plan, which aims to make 5G reality for citizens and businesses in the member states by the end of 2020.

Designating Osijek as Croatia’s first 5G city … will significantly contribute to the development of the eastern part of Croatia,” Butkovic said, adding that all three domestic mobile operators were ready to jointly build and introduce 5G infrastructure and services in the city of Osijek.

Osijek was selected for the project by representatives of the transport ministry, Croatia’s telecommunications agency HAKOM, and the three mobile operators present in Croatia – Hrvatski Telekom, A1 Hrvatska and Tele2 Hrvatska.

Here are some updates on the status of 5G in Croatia:

  1. Testing phase: The major telecom operators in Croatia, such as Hrvatski Telekom, A1 Hrvatska, and Tele2, have started testing their 5G networks in certain locations, but the network is not yet available nationwide.
  2. Infrastructure development: The telecom operators have been upgrading their network infrastructure to support 5G technology. They are building more 5G base stations and installing fiber-optic cables to support faster data speeds.
  3. Frequency spectrum: In 2020, Croatia’s Agency for Electronic Media and Post (AEM) allocated frequency spectrum for 5G to the telecom operators. This was a significant step towards the development of 5G in the country.
  4. Challenges: One of the main challenges for 5G deployment in Croatia is the lack of 5G-enabled devices. As more 5G-enabled devices become available in the market, it is expected that the adoption of 5G technology will increase.

Overall, the development of 5G in Croatia is still in its early stages, and it may take some time before it becomes widely available throughout the country. However, the major telecom operators are investing in upgrading their infrastructure and testing their 5G networks, which is a positive sign for the future of 5G in Croatia.
