The Chinese multinational telecommunications company Huawei inaugurated its new European technology support and service center in Madrid on Wednesday, with which it will provide technical support to the main telecommunication partners in ten European countries. Madrid had been chosen not only for its “unique advantages” but also for the “broad support provided by Spain,” said Li Peng, president of Huawei Europe (WEU).

Isabel Diaz Ayuso, president of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, said that such projects will lead to the creation of over 200 highly qualified jobs and will provide “a boost to our region.”

Huawei currently has more than 10,000 employees in Europe and serves customers in almost every European country.

At the 2021 Huawei European Innovation Day, Huawei announced its Seeds for the Future 2.0 program, through which the company intends to invest 35 million euros to support European ICT professionals and promote the development of a digital Europe over the next five years.

As part of the Seeds for the Future 2.0 program, Huawei also announced the launch of a new ICT talent development program, the Seeds for the Future Scholarship, to support the ICT upskilling of students in Europe.

Huawei has been working to improve the ICT skills of students across partnered European colleges and universities through programs like Seeds for the Future, ICT Academy, and Developer Training, as well as joint cultivation programs. The company aims to, directly and indirectly, benefit 500,000 ICT professionals across Europe with these programs over the next five years.

Under the Seeds for the Future Scholarship program, Huawei will invest 2.5 million euros over the next year to support the education of talented students in Europe, improve their ICT skills, and elevate the development of their careers. Huawei will also continue its cooperation with top universities in Europe to enhance the capabilities and potential of the next generation of European innovators.

Huawei Senior Vice President and Board Member Catherine Chen noted during her opening remarks, “In the digital economy, digital talent will be the key to digital transformation and economic growth. Digital skills and literacy are not just essential to the development of the digital economy, but also basic human rights in the new era, as defined by the United Nations. Phillip Gan, President of Huawei’s CEE & Nordic Region, stated, “A digital Europe should have a skilled workforce. Collaboration between businesses and universities is a good way to achieve this. Working together helps drive science forward, and it also supports industry development. Over the past 10 years, Huawei has trained more than 30,000 ICT professionals in Europe through our programs like Seeds for the Future. We will continue investment in these programs in the future to help Europe develop even more ICT professionals.”

Huawei first launched its Seeds for the Future 2.0 program in July 2021, at the Tech & Sustainability – Everyone’s Included forum. Through this program, Huawei will invest US$150 million over the next five years to improve the digital skills of university students and young entrepreneurs. Three million people are expected to benefit from this program. Huawei welcomes more individuals and organizations to join its TECH4ALL initiative and collaborate to promote programs that develop digital talent.

Huawei has participated in talent development initiatives in Europe for many years. Its flagship programs, like Seeds for the Future, ICT Academy, and One Thousand Dreams, form a growing talent development ecosystem that supports universities and secondary schools. Huawei has set up 147 ICT academies and certified over 20,000 ICT professionals in Europe alone. The Seeds for the Future program, in particular, has already helped more than 2,600 college students across the continent.

In addition to this announcement, a number of other notable speakers gave presentations at Huawei’s 2021 European Innovation Day, including former Austrian President Heinz Fischer, Deputy Minister of Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Region and Tourism Andreas Reichhardt, EU Parliament Member Lukas Mandl.
