The typical character limit is an absurdly low 280. On your timeline, all tweets will be limited to that amount, and if you want to read a longer tweet in full, you’ll need to click the “display more” button.

“While only Blue subscribers can post longer Tweets, anyone and everyone can read them,” Twitter said in an announcement tweet that showed the higher character limit in action. “You can reply to, retweet, and quote Tweet a longer Tweet, no matter if you’re a Twitter Blue subscriber or not. Subscribers will be able to reply and QT with up to 4,000 characters.”

Longer tweets will allow you to include attachments, polls, and hashtags; however, for the time being, they cannot be scheduled to send at a later time or saved as drafts. It aims to lessen the need for threads, which are formed by linking multiple tweets together to form a single, extensive train of thought.

Standard Twitter users are now limited to 280 characters, up from the platform’s initial 140-character cap in 2017.

The new character limit increase is Twitter’s latest attempt to persuade users to subscribe to its premium service. In addition to the ability to modify their tweets and a blue checkmark next to their account names, Twitter Blue subscribers receive these benefits for $8 a month.

Over the past few months, Twitter has gradually added additional capabilities to Twitter Blue. When the service first started last year, it was temporarily suspended after trolls utilized its dearth of moderation and verification to spoof legitimate Twitter accounts. Twitter Blue subscriptions are no longer available to new users for at least 90 days after their accounts are created.
