Three Ireland wrongly bills customers for data roaming fees

Three Ireland has come under fire for reportedly billing customers for data roaming fees despite such charges being covered under EU roaming regulations. Affected customers have voiced frustrations over unexpected fees, which contradict the “Roam Like at Home” policy in the European Union. Three Ireland has apologized after including bogus roaming fees on customers’ bills.

In some circumstances, subscribers had been instructed that they had been charged greater than €160 ($179; £147) for giant quantities of data use that exceeded their allowance.

Many have been alerted to the cost by a sequence of textual content messages from the agency, after which they discovered that their service had been suspended as a consequence.

Three Ireland roaming bills – “errors”

The corporation has blamed “a system improvement error”.

It added on social media that it was at present attempting to establish which customers had been affected and would refund them “in the end”.

Some customers have complained that they’ve been instructed they must wait a number of days for the cash to be reimbursed.

3 Ireland has advised customers to ignore the errant text messages and said refunds would be issued.

“Due to an error with an IT system upgrade, some customers received SMS yesterday about charges that may have applied incorrectly to their account,” the company said in a statement.

“Prepay customers will be refunded … Bill payments to customers will be rectified on their next bill. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
