Atac pilots contactless fare payments, Tap & Go, on buses in Rome

Rome’s public transport operator Atac is testing the ‘Tap & Go’ contactless fare payment system, already in use on the Italian capital’s subway network, on one of the city’s main bus routes prior to implementing it across its entire bus fleet. This Rome bus contactless tap-go system allows travelers to conveniently tap their cards or mobile devices for quick access, streamlining the payment process city-wide.

To use the tap & go ® service you just need a contactless credit, debit or prepaid card, or that has the symbol icon contactless.   Access to the metro lines is possible also with digital cards on NFC-enabled devices (smartphones, smartwatches, etc.).

How Rome bus contactless tap-go works?

ATAC has installed contactless readers detectable by the symbol icon contactless on the turnstiles of all stations of lines A, B/B1, C and of the Roma-Lido, Roma-Viterbo and Termini-Centocelle railways.

To enter using the tap & go ® service you have to approach your contactless payment card or your reader-enabled device, wait for the green light on the screen and the consequent unlocking of the turnstile. If the reader detects more than one payment card or contactless device, the turnstile will not open. To avoid this problem, place near the reader only the device or card you want to use removing it from the wallet.

Remember that on the B1 line there are also exit turnstiles and you will have to tap again to exit the station. The exit tap does not involve further charges.

Which cards can you use?

  • all contactless cards of the networks: Mastercard – Visa – American Express
  • all contactless debit cards of the networks: Mastercard – Maestro – Vpay
  • all rechargeable prepaid contactless cards of the networks: Mastercard – Visa

Where to use the service?

The service works on the entire metro network of Rome (metro lines A, B/B1 and C) and on the regional railway lines operated by Atac (Roma-Lido, Termini-Centocelle, Roma-Viterbo urban section), in the stations equipped with entrance turnstiles. Furthermore, you will be able to continue your journey on all Atac surface urban vehicles (buses, trams and trolleybuses) up to the hourly validity of the ticket (100 minutes), provided that the journey has started at one of the above-mentioned stations. If you want to continue your journey on Cotral vehicles, you must have downloaded the Atac tap & go ®  application (only on Android devices with NFC technology), necessary in case of onboard controls. If you use your card as a monthly subscription (whitelist) you can travel on the entire Atac network during the charged month.
