Movistar, the leading telecommunications provider in Spain, has recently announced a significant enhancement to its eSIM services by enabling comprehensive online management through the Mi Movistar app and website.

This initiative allows customers to handle various eSIM-related tasks remotely, eliminating the need to visit physical stores.

Key Features of Movistar’s Enhanced eSIM Management:

  • New Line Activation and Portability: Customers can now activate new lines or port existing numbers to Movistar using eSIM technology directly through the app.
  • Device Loss or Theft Recovery: In cases of device loss or theft, users can swiftly recover their lines by managing eSIM settings online, ensuring uninterrupted service.
  • Device Switching: Transferring eSIM profiles between devices, even those from different manufacturers, is now streamlined and can be accomplished without visiting a store.

To ensure the security of these online operations, Movistar has implemented an advanced verification system. This process requires customers to authenticate their identity using their DNI/NIE and a real-time selfie, adding a robust layer of protection to the digital management of eSIMs.

It’s important to note that this fully digital eSIM management service is currently available exclusively to Movistar’s contract customers. Prepaid users and customers of Movistar’s subsidiary, O2, will need to continue managing their eSIM services through traditional customer service channels.

This development underscores Movistar’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance customer experience, providing more flexible and secure options for managing mobile connectivity.

eSIM Adoption in Spain: Trends, Growth, and Future Outlook

Spain is witnessing a notable surge in eSIM adoption, reflecting broader European trends. In 2023, the European eSIM market generated approximately $2.58 billion in revenue, with projections indicating growth to $4.49 billion by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.3%. This expansion is driven by increased consumer demand for seamless connectivity and the proliferation of eSIM-enabled devices. Notably, in 2024, global eSIM-capable device shipments surpassed half a billion units, underscoring the technology’s accelerating adoption.

In Spain, leading telecommunications providers like Movistar and Vodafone have transitioned from traditional SIM cards to eSIM technology, offering enhanced security and flexibility. This shift allows users to associate multiple numbers and tariffs across various devices, a feature particularly beneficial for frequent travelers. As eSIM technology becomes more prevalent, it’s anticipated that Spain will continue to align with Europe’s trajectory toward widespread eSIM integration across consumer electronics and IoT devices
