Google Pixel 10 Could Go eSIM-Only in the US

A fresh leak—surfaced by tipster Evan Blass via X—suggests that the upcoming Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL models sold in the United States may drop the physical SIM tray entirely, instead offering two active eSIM slots. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold appears to be the sole exception, retaining a traditional physical SIM slot alongside eSIM support.

This is a notable development for Google, which helped bring eSIM into mainstream smartphones with the Pixel 2 in 2017—the first handset to feature the technology—following its debut in the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch in 2016.

Industry Trend: Following Apple’s eSIM-Only US Strategy

This move would align Google with Apple’s regional approach—since the iPhone 14, Apple has provided eSIM-only models in the US, while international versions still include physical SIM slots. Such a regional deployment allows OEMs to test new form factors and simplify hardware in markets with strong eSIM adoption, while maintaining compatibility in regions where physical SIMs remain prevalent.

Benefits: Convenience, Security, and Internal Space Gains

Going eSIM‑only carries several potential advantages. Users gain the convenience of switching carriers digitally, without needing to swap small SIM cards. eSIMs also improve security by eliminating a removable component that can be tampered with or lost. And from a design perspective, removing the SIM tray frees up internal chassis space that could be repurposed for enhancements like larger batteries or improved components.

Concerns: Usability and Regional Compatibility

Despite its appeals, the rumor has raised concerns. Android Central notes that some users find eSIMs less intuitive, especially when performing tasks like transferring a number or switching devices. Moreover, several leaked renders and CAD models of the Pixel 10 series appear to show SIM trays—though these images mostly omit the bottom frame where a tray would be located. This inconsistency keeps the rumor ambiguous and subject to confirmation.

Awaiting Clarity at the August 20 Launch Event

Google is expected to officially unveil the Pixel 10 series on August 20, 2025. This launch will confirm whether the US models truly go eSIM‑only and whether the decision will vary by region.

What You Need to Know

To recap: rumors suggest the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, and 10 Pro XL may be eSIM‑only in the US, offering dual eSIM slots, while the Pro Fold retains a physical SIM slot. This mirrors Apple’s regional approach and introduces benefits like digital carrier switching, enhanced security, and hardware optimization. Yet doubts remain due to prior render leaks, and user comfort with eSIM processes is still growing. All will be revealed when Google hosts its event in late August.
