Google’s Pixel 8 Arrives with the Long-Awaited eSIM Transfer Tool
In 2022, Apple led the way in eSIM adoption by removing the physical SIM card slot from the iPhone 14 series in the US. While top-tier Android phones also support eSIM, none of the manufacturers have yet dared to eliminate the SIM card slot from their devices.
However, with Apple fully embracing eSIM technology, the demise of the SIM card slot seems unavoidable. Before this occurs, Android must improve its eSIM transition process. Google vowed to address this issue at MWC 2023, and with the introduction of the Pixel 8 series, its new eSIM transfer tool is now operational.
Mishaal Rahman reported that upon initial startup, the Pixel 8 will guide users to transfer their existing eSIM from their current Pixel phone to the new one. The process of transferring eSIM between devices should have been uncomplicated, but it’s rather complex.
Without a transfer tool, you must first deactivate the eSIM from your old phone and then reactivate it on the new device. In some instances, you might need to get in touch with your carrier for this. Given these complications, it’s not surprising that eSIM adoption hasn’t really gained momentum among consumers unless pushed by the device maker. The new eSIM transfer tool in Pixel 8 is expected to significantly simplify the eSIM transition process between phones.
eSIM transfer is finally here, as Google promised! When you set up the Pixel 8, it seems you have the option to transfer certain eSIM profiles from your old Pixel phone to your new one.

You can also convert your physical SIM into an eSIM with the tool
The tool provides a feature to transform your physical SIM into an eSIM profile. However, as with all emerging technologies, initial hiccups are expected. Mishaal highlights that the migration tool may not function seamlessly across all devices and network providers, so experiences may differ.
Google isn’t the pioneer in the Android sphere to introduce an eSIM migration tool. Samsung claimed this distinction earlier, with One UI 5.1 facilitating the conversion of a physical SIM to an eSIM and expanding carrier support for eSIM transfer among compatible Galaxy devices.
At present, it’s uncertain whether Google’s eSIM migration tool is compatible with non-Pixel devices and iPhones. Carrier support also remains a significant concern, with some service providers imposing a nominal fee for transferring eSIMs between devices.
As consumer adoption of eSIM technology grows, the process of transferring your eSIM between phones from various manufacturers should become increasingly straightforward. Until that time, it’s advisable to either stick with your physical SIM card or be ready to encounter some challenges when transitioning to eSIM.
