The original agreement to end roaming fees was reached in 2017, with charges to be scrapped gradually by 2020. However, in May last year, during a meeting between officials of Chile’s telecoms regulator Subtel and Argentina’s Enacom, authorities agreed to speed up the process and end roaming fees in 2019.

Argentina is also involved in talks to end roaming fees within the Mercosur trading bloc, whose other members are Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Venezuela is currently suspended from the bloc while Bolivia is in the process of becoming a member.

Chile, on its part, is advancing the issue with its fellow members in the Pacific Alliance trading group, which includes Colombia, Mexico and Peru.

Last month also saw 19 nations from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean sign an agreement to work towards the long-term elimination of roaming fees in the Americas.

In addition, Argentina and Brazil are implementing a roaming agreement that covers border cities.

Five years ago, Brazil signed a similar agreement with Peru to benefit residents of border towns, which only came into effect in June 2017. Chilean-Argentine roaming elimination
