The most notable transformation across the entire iPhone 15 series is the transition to the universally recognized USB Type-C connectivity port. Despite this, Apple has ingeniously maintained a distinction between the standard and Pro models regarding data transfer rates. The new iPhones also introduce numerous other substantial modifications. So, without further ado, let’s delve deeper into these exciting changes.

iPhone 15: Model Overview

The iPhone 15 generation comprises four models — the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The iPhone 15 Mini, which was part of the iPhone 13 generation, has been discontinued since the iPhone 14 generation.

Furthermore, there is no iPhone 15 “Ultra” model with extended upgrades over the iPhone 15 Pro Max as previously speculated.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 generation on September 12. Preorders for the iPhone 15 models and iPhone 15 Pro models will commence at 8 am ET on September 15, with the phones set to be released on September 22.

The pricing for the iPhone 15 generation is consistent with that of the iPhone 14 generation at launch, except for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The base model of the iPhone 15 Pro Max now starts with a storage capacity of 256GB instead of the previous 128GB option from the iPhone 14 Pro Max, resulting in a price increase of €100 to €1,199.

The iPhone 15 series continues to feature a physical SIM card slot, despite the increasing prevalence of eSIM technology. While the iPhone 15 models support eSIM functionality, they have retained the SIM card tray for added flexibility, especially for users outside the United States. This combination of traditional SIM and eSIM support allows users to switch between multiple carriers or plans more easily, catering to those who travel frequently or wish to use separate numbers for personal and business purposes. The company touted that full console titles can run on the iPhone 15 Pro models, like “Resident Evil Village,” “Resident Evil 4,” “Death Stranding,” and “Assassin’s Creed Mirage.”

iPhone 15: Action Button

Apple replaced the iconic iPhone ring/silent switch with a new customizable Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. You can customize the Action button’s function, like toggling the flashlight; quickly launching apps like Camera, Voice Memos, and Translate; setting a Focus mode; or running a Shortcut. And yes, you can also set it to the traditional ring/silent switch.

iPhone 15: USB-C

Apple replaced the Lightning port with a USB-C port on the entire iPhone 15 lineup. Charging speed remains at the same 18-20W, as it was with Lightning. However, it’s now possible to charge another device from an iPhone 15 with a USB-C cable, like the latest AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C.

The USB-C ports aren’t the same between the iPhone 15 models and the iPhone 15 Pro models. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus only support USB 2 transfer speeds, which is typically 480Mbps, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s USB-C port support USB 3 speeds. The iPhone 15 Pro models support up to 10Gb/s speeds, which suggests they use the USB 3.1 Gen 2 standard.

iPhone 15: Dynamic Island

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus now feature Apple’s Dynamic Island, previously exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models. This innovative feature replaces the notch that was first introduced with the iPhone X in 2017.
Dynamic Island offers an interactive and immersive user experience, transforming how users interact with their devices. The feature seamlessly adapts to individual usage patterns, ensuring your most-used apps are always within easy reach. So…Should You Consider Investing in an iPhone 15?

The iPhone 15 series brings a host of upgrades and novel features that could justify your investment, depending on your individual needs and the model you are currently using.

Transitioning to the iPhone 15 generation to benefit from any particular new feature has never been more affordable or simpler. Apple and carriers present impressive trade-in deals based on the age and condition of your existing iPhone. If you can exchange your old phone for a new one free of charge or at a substantial discount, it becomes difficult to argue against upgrading to the iPhone 15 series.

Without even having hands-on experience with the iPhone 15 models yet, we can confidently say that the cameras on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus represent a significant upgrade. Notably, the new feature allowing the use of the 48MP sensor as a 12MP 2x optical zoom lens adds meaningful versatility while preserving high photo quality. The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 5x “tetraprism” zoom lens requires further examination before making any final judgments, but if you’ve ever wished for better photos of distant subjects, an upgrade is certainly worth considering.

The lighter titanium frame is a favorable evolution for the iPhone 15 Pro models. I’ve always maintained that the iPhone 14 Pro series, especially the iPhone 14 Pro Max, is excessively heavy for an everyday device. Apple’s latest contoured edge design is also appealing, as I find the sharper design introduced by the iPhone 12 through to the iPhone 14 to be distinctly uncomfortable.

The inclusion of USB-C in the iPhone 15 generation is definitely a welcome change, allowing you to charge your phone with the same cable as your Mac, iPad (if they are also USB-C models), and any other device that uses USB-C for charging. However, since iPhone users already possess Lightning cables, we wouldn’t classify it as a feature that necessitates an immediate upgrade.

It’s safe to say that if you own an iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or any iPhone model from before 2017, you should seriously contemplate upgrading to a newer iPhone, whether it’s from the iPhone 15, iPhone 14, or iPhone 13 generations that Apple offers. It’s worth noting that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have received a $100 price reduction, with new starting prices of $699 and $799 respectively. The price of the iPhone 13 has also been further reduced by $100, bringing its starting price down to $599.

Historically, Apple’s iPhones have been reliable, barring occasional software bugs that are often rectified in software updates. You can generally expect to receive a dependable phone, and the iPhone 15 series should be no exception.
