German govt plans to invest EUR 1.1 bln to cover mobile dead spots

Mobile dead spots, also known as areas with poor or no mobile network coverage, are a common problem in many parts of Germany. The German government plans to invest EUR 1.1 billion to cover 5,000 so-called mobile dead spots, the news portal The Pioneer reports citing unnamed sources. The federal states and the municipalities will not fund the expansion of mobile networks, the report added. Find out more about mobile dead spots in Germany below.

Gaps in coverage should be eliminated by the state programme if companies in the private sector are not expected to invest in the near future under existing obligations or expansion plans, the report said. The work to improve the mobile coverage would be coordinated by a public infrastructure company, according to a draft paper to be presented at a summit on mobile communications on 16 June.

According to the draft, the procedure for the approval of mobile sites has to be accelerated and the approval given within three months from the start of the application by an operator. In addition, the government wants to improve communication with the public to provide additional information on application procedures and possible risks caused by the use of mobile technology. mobile dead spots germany

According to a 2021 survey by the German Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), around 1.1 million households in Germany do not have access to reliable mobile network coverage. The survey identified several regions across the country that were particularly affected by mobile dead spots, including parts of the states of Bavaria, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Schleswig-Holstein.

In Bavaria, for example, there are many rural areas with poor mobile network coverage, particularly in the mountainous regions of the Bavarian Alps. Similarly, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, there are many areas with limited or no mobile network coverage, particularly in the eastern part of the state.

To address this problem, the German government has launched a program to improve mobile network coverage in areas with poor reception. Under the program, telecom companies are required to improve mobile network coverage in so-called “white spots” – areas with no mobile coverage at all – and “gray spots” – areas with limited or unreliable coverage.

Despite these efforts, however, mobile dead spots remain a problem in many parts of Germany, particularly in more remote areas. To help mitigate the problem, some mobile network providers have developed technologies such as signal boosters and Wi-Fi calling, which can help users to maintain a connection in areas with the poor network coverage.
