Zamtel launches eSIM services in Zambia

Zamtel, one of Zambia’s leading telecom operators, has officially launched eSIM (embedded SIM) services in the country, marking a major step towards enhanced digital experiences for Zambians. The eSIM technology eliminates the need for physical SIM cards and offers users increased convenience, flexibility, and ease of use, with dual numbers on one device. This advancement especially benefits travellers, tourists, and individuals managing multiple phone numbers. zamtel esim

In a speech delivered by Zamtel’s Chief Technical Officer, Mwiya Wamunyima, on behalf of Zamtel CEO Jason Mwanza, the company reiterated its dedication to technological advancement in Zambia.

“We strive to be at the forefront of technological advancements, not only in communications but also in financial payment solutions. Our expanding network and dedicated team work tirelessly, both in the spotlight and behind the scenes, to ensure seamless service. Today, we are here to add even more value to our customers’ experience with us. The eSIM is exactly what it sounds like: a virtual SIM card that eliminates the need for a physical card. It offers the same functionality as a traditional SIM but with added convenience,” he said.

Zamtel’s introduction of the eSIM service also reflects its ongoing commitment to driving Zambia’s digital transformation. By allowing customers to maintain dual numbers on a single device, the eSIM simplifies how users manage their accounts, especially for business owners, frequent travellers, and those who operate on multiple networks.

Speaking at the launch event, the Guest of Honour, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Technology and Science, Dr. Brilliant Habeenzu, emphasized the significance of this launch for Zambia.

“eSIM technology has seen increasing adoption globally, particularly in developed markets and regions with strong telecom infrastructure. The global market for eSIM is projected to grow significantly, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.4% from 2024 to 2030. By 2030, the market is expected to be valued at around $24.8 billion, up from $8.03 billion in 2024.”

Dr. Habeenzu pointed out that while Africa’s adoption of eSIM technology has been slower compared to other regions, due to infrastructural challenges and lower smartphone penetration, the market is expanding.

“This growth is driven by mobile operators like Zamtel and the increasing availability of compatible devices. As of 2023, approximately 3.4 billion eSIM-capable devices were in circulation globally, including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and IoT devices. This number is expected to reach over 6 billion by 2025.”

Zamtel Drives eSIM Adoption in Zambia

In Zambia, smartphone penetration is reported to be above 50%, which indicates that over half of the population now has access to smartphones. However, affordability and availability of devices, particularly in rural areas, remain challenges.

“These are issues we are committed to addressing in partnership with the private sector,” Dr. Habeenzu stated, adding that the government is actively working to transition Zambia from 2G to 3G, 4G, and even 5G networks. This effort is in line with Zambia’s digital transformation agenda, aiming to scale up smartphone adoption and eSIM technology nationwide.

Dr. Habeenzu also emphasized the importance of cybersecurity, particularly as more devices become e-SIM-enabled.

“With the transition and increased uptake of eSIM technology, we need to enhance cybersecurity and the protection of personal data. This is why the government is strengthening the cybersecurity legal framework to ensure that critical information and infrastructure supporting eSIM technology is protected.”

Zamtel has ensured that the eSIM activation process is user-friendly. Customers can visit any Zamtel retail outlet to activate their eSIM or dial *9595# to customize their eSIM number based on availability. The e-SIM functions just like a traditional SIM but will go dormant after three months of inactivity. To check if a phone supports eSIM, users can dial *#06#—if an EID serial number appears, the device is compatible.

As part of its promotional efforts, Zamtel is offering free eSIMs with the purchase of select data bundles. For instance, customers who buy a 6GB bundle for K20 at any Zamtel store will receive a complimentary eSIM, making it an enticing offer for both current and potential Zamtel users.

In addition, tourists and frequent travellers will benefit greatly from this service. The eSIM allows them to add a local Zamtel number without having to remove their existing SIM, giving them the flexibility to access local services without compromising their home number.
