Uber Technologies Inc. is expanding its Uber Travel feature for UK customers, letting users book and manage Eurostar trips from London to Europe. eurostar uber

The move expands Uber Travel, which is already available in the U.S. and Canada, to include long-distance trips. The San Francisco-based company, which is pushing to expand spending on its app to boost profitability, also rolled out the ability to book chartered shuttles and coaches earlier this year. This week, Uber reported that sales increased more than expected in the second quarter thanks to resilient consumer demand.

Users will be able to purchase Eurostar rail tickets from London to destinations including Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. The Uber app will also automatically import trip plans from users’ email accounts so that bookings for dining and accommodation can be viewed in one place via a deal with Google’s Gmail service.

“With air passengers set for travel disruption this summer, the new Uber app feature will also provide updated timings of your flights should there be any changes, adjusting your itinerary accordingly,” the Uber announcement said.

Eurostar travel booking services will be offered via a partnership with German startup Omio, which provides a platform for booking trains, buses, flights, and ferries.

Selling train tickets on its app will bring Uber into competition with other ticket-booking companies, like London’s Trainline Plc. During a summer when European air travel has been beleaguered by delays and labor shortages, Trainline is benefiting from a better-than-expected resurgence in rail passengers and tourism.

Naren Shaam, founder and CEO of Berlin, Germany-based Omio, formerly known as GoEuro, said Omio licenses its rail and coach supply from more than 1,000 suppliers to Uber, which creates the user experience within the Uber app.

Omio, which acquired Rome2Rio in 2019 in a merger of so-called multi-modal transportation businesses, invested in building the business-to-business side — as opposed to the consumer proposition — of its operation during the pandemic. In addition to Uber, Omio powers rail for Kayak and Huawei, among others. It raised $80 million in funding this year.

“Uber Travel forms an integral part of Uber’s vision for being a one-stop shop for door-to-door travel,” said Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, in a statement. “This will allow our customers to plan ahead by making bookings with Eurostar, or help ease the stress of travel this summer with updated flight details automatically imported into the smart itinerary.” eurostar uber
