The two countries last week signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which will see the introduction of initiatives to enhance trade between Singapore and Malaysiaโ€™s Johor state.

Here are some of the key details of the new system: Singapore and Malaysia passport-free

  • Travelers will be able to generate a QR code from their mobile devices or kiosks at the border crossing.
  • The QR code will contain the traveler’s personal information and travel details.
  • Immigration officers will scan the QR code to verify the traveler’s identity and clearance status.
  • Travelers who are cleared will be able to proceed through the border without having to show their passports.

The new system is expected to be implemented in phases, starting in early 2024. In the first phase, the system will be rolled out to travelers crossing the border in cars. In later phases, the system will be extended to cover travelers crossing the border on foot and by bus.

Exactly how the QR code-based passport replacement will work has not been revealed yet. Other technological measures will include the adoption of digitized processes for cargo clearance.

The implementation of the QR code-based clearance system is a significant step towards further integrating Singapore and Malaysia. It is also expected to make border crossings more efficient and convenient for travelers.
