The global coworking spaces market is expected to decline from $9.27 billion in 2019 and to $8.24 billion in 2020 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -12.9%. The decline is mainly due to economic slowdown across countries owing to the COVID-19 outbreak and the measures to contain it.

The market is then expected to recover and reach $11.52 billion in 2023 at CAGR of 11.8%. Europe was the largest region in the coworking spaces market in 2019.

The increase in the number of people working from home or remotely owing to the COVID-19 lockdown limits the growth of the market. For instance, in March 2020, many companies working from home owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, and operators of coworking spaces have seen an almost 50% decline in footfalls. Furthermore, according to Business 2 Community publication in April 2020, the number of people working remotely has grown by 44% in the last five years, with 7 million people (3.4% of the population) working remotely in the USA before the arrival of COVID-19. Nevertheless, the number of people working remotely is tremendously increased owing to the coronavirus outbreak over the last few months. Consequently, the revenues generated by the coworking spaces market during 2020.

The development of sustainable coworking spaces is a major trend shaping the coworking space market. Coworking spaces are implementing eco-friendly measures in the workplace to attract entrepreneurs concerned with environmental issues such as global warming. Sustainable practices adopted by the coworking space providers offer substantial benefits and are economically feasible.

Major players in the coworking spaces market are WeWork, Regus Corporation (IWG PLC), Mix Pace, Knotel Inc., SimplyWork, District Cowork, Premier Workspaces, Kr Space, Convene, and Servcorp Limited.

Flexible workspace giant IWG-Regus has signed agreements with three large companies in the first quarter of 2021, making this a record-breaking start to the year for the organization. In February, the flexible workspace operator signed with the London-based Standard Chartered to give its 95,000 employees access to 3,500 IWG workspaces worldwide.

In March, the company struck its largest deal to date with NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation), enabling its 300,000 employees to work from IWG’s global network of offices. More recently, Nestlé – the world’s largest food and beverage company – signed an agreement to provide its employees across China with access to IWG’s network of flexible workspaces.

The enthusiasm for flexible workspace is clearly linked with a general, global shift towards a hybrid style of working, says Mark Dixon, Founder and CEO of IWG Plc. “One of the lasting legacies of the pandemic will be the ability to work in different ways, in different places, and more companies will have distributed workforces empowering their teams to work closer to or from home,” he explains. As the benefits of a hybrid model become apparent, IWG expects to see a growing number of companies opening up their workplace options to a more widespread, global network – increasing employee satisfaction and widening the search for global talent.

The benefit of these solutions will extend far beyond the employee experience and will have a positive impact on our individual and collective carbon footprint by empowering people to work closer to home,” says Mark La Neve, CEO of NTT Global Sourcing. “These will not only reduce commute times, but lower travel costs and provide a safe and convenient location for our people.”
