Berlin Ranked Number 1 Smart City in Europe in 2023
A new study from Juniper Research, the foremost expert in the sustainability & IoT market, has selected BerIin as the leading smart city in Europe in 2023. Number 1 Smart City in Europe
Juniper Research’s ranking of 50 world cities is based on an evaluation of many different smart city aspects, covering transportation and infrastructure, energy and lighting, city management and technology, and urban connectivity.
The top 5 smart cities ranked by Juniper Research are:
- Berlin
- London
- Barcelona
- Rome
- Madrid
The analysis identified Berlin as a leading city due to its focus on improving its transit infrastructure, such as with the MaaS (Mobility-as-a-Service) app Jelbi, which has unified public and private transit in one app. Berlin has also taken proactive steps on shared micro-mobility and renewable energy generation, demonstrating a joined-up approach to smart city development.
- Berlin: Berlin is known for its innovative smart city initiatives, particularly in the areas of energy, mobility, and ICT. Besides mentioned transit infrastructure, the city has implemented a range of projects, such as the “Smart City Berlin Network”, which aims to promote the exchange of information and cooperation between businesses, science, and administration.
- London: London’s smart city strategy focuses on digital technology and data to make the city an even better place to live, work, and invest. The city has implemented projects like the London Datastore, a free and open data-sharing portal where anyone can access data relating to the capital.
- Barcelona: Barcelona has been a pioneer in smart city initiatives in Europe. The city has implemented various projects, such as smart street lights, smart water management systems, and an extensive network of sensors to monitor everything from air quality to noise levels.
- Rome: Rome has been focusing on smart city initiatives to improve the quality of life of its citizens and the millions of tourists it receives each year. The city has been investing in smart mobility, smart tourism, and smart environment projects.
- Madrid: Madrid has been focusing on smart city projects to improve sustainability and quality of life. The city has implemented initiatives like the Madrid Intelligent City (MiNT) project, which aims to improve municipal services through the use of ICT.
Research co-author Nick Maynard explained: “Europe, as the birthplace of MaaS, has seen significant development and deployment of the concept over the past few years. As such, transit in leading European smart cities is a central part of future strategies for smart city development – cities aiming to follow this approach must take a coordinated method to transit; embracing the benefits of MaaS in reducing congestion.”
