Several key trends we expect to see at MWC this year include:
CARRIERS and NETWORKS MWC Barcelona 2023
Efficiency will be a key topic for mobile operators and solutions vendors at the show. Profit margins are under pressure for the operator community and identifying savings in operational expenditure (OPEX) is one of their biggest business issues in 2023. Operators need help on their long-term path to Net Zero and their short-term need to keep at least some control over energy costs, while the GSMA’s themes of 5G Acceleration and OpenNet bring with them network complexities that will require operational efficiencies only available via greater network automation. Beyond cost control, we are also on the lookout for signs of revenue opportunities from 5G. Four years on from the first launches, despite recently passing one billion global connections, few operators have unlocked meaningful revenue upside from their significant investments. Hopefully, in Barcelona, we will see more innovation from operators on 5G Standalone services for vertical solutions and more advanced consumer applications, and more from vendors on progress with 5G advanced solutions that will really complete the 5G vision. Oh, and don’t forget Open RAN from Asia and elsewhere…
SMARTPHONES / WEARABLES MWC Barcelona 2023
This year will be about the emergence of 5G superphones, such as the Honor Mogic 5 range and Samsung’s S23 Ultra with 200MP camera for enhanced nightography. Monster tech specs are surging into the mobile handset space. The spec wars are in full flow! We also expect to see a number of foldables, from Samsung, OPPO and others. The foldables industry has struggled so far, but the trend is not going away, and we expect to see multiple 5G models that are thinner, lighter and bigger than ever before. Meanwhile, don’t forget wearables. The wearables category is growing faster than almost any other major tech segment, led by smartwatches and soon smart glasses. Can Garmin, Vuzix or one of the other innovative wearable OEMs surprise us this year with a unique device?
