Mauritius Telecom launches 5G network
my.t mobile, Mauritius Telecom’s mobile network, has launched 5G services in the country one month after it obtained a 5G licence, reports L’Express Maurice.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Ebene on 29 July, Mauritius Telecom CEO Sherry Singh noted the operator is among the first to launch 5G in Africa.
‘We are going to deploy this network with the help of our subscribers. They are the ones who will register to receive the network which is ten times faster than the current network. The same packages will be maintained,’ he said.
MyT Mobile customers will receive a message inviting them to register to connect to the network at four ‘my.t 5G Experience Zones’ in Ebene Cybercity, La City Trianon and Bagatelle shopping malls and Mauritius University in Reduit. Tests have shown the network is around ten times faster than the telco’s 4G service, supporting peak speeds of up to 1Gbps and average transfer rates of between 200Mbps and 700Mbps. Registered customers will require a 5G compatible handset and a 5G SIM to access the new service.
