KPN to encourage cycling with higher employee allowance

KPN will encourage and reward employees who cycle to work. KPN is the first company in the Netherlands to offer a net kilometer allowance of € 0.40 per bicycle kilometer. kpn offers sustainability
In combination with an attractive lease bicycle plan, colleagues can ride an (electric) bicycle at a very low cost. If you cycle to the office one day a week with a travel distance of 15 km one way, you can drive an average electric bicycle for almost nothing. And for those who cycle even more, the scheme is extra advantageous.

KPN wants to make a serious contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions and has the ambition to achieve 0% emissions across the entire chain by 2040, including business travel. That is why KPN is also a member of the Coalitie Anders Reizen, a network of more than 70 large employers who want to make their mobility drastically more sustainable.

Carlo Steenvoorden, responsible for mobility at KPN:

For us, sustainability means that we want to minimize the impact on our environment and at the same time make a positive contribution to solving social issues. Mobility is one such issue. But how do we make it attractive to opt for the bicycle and public transport? This requires a behavioral change. We believe that this will succeed by stimulating and rewarding sustainable transport choices: the better for the environment, the better for your wallet.”

Unique arrangement

That is why every colleague employed by KPN is given the opportunity to ride a bicycle at an affordable price via the new lease plan. For every bicycle kilometer, KPN pays € 0.40 net. The reimbursement also applies when using your own bicycle and for the kilometers traveled to a station. Steenvoorden continues: “The Netherlands is a cycling country par excellence, so the bicycle, together with public transport, should be the means of transport for the Dutch to travel to work every day. With a bicycle scheme like this in combination with a public transport card and our offices being close to public transport, I am convinced that more and more KPN employees are opting for sustainable travel. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if KPN employees cycle an average of 30 kilometers a week!”

Freedom of choice kpn offers sustainability

The bicycle kilometer allowance and the lease bicycle plan are part of KPN’s renewed mobility offer, which will take effect on 1 August. KPN encourages sustainable transport options but offers maximum freedom of choice and ample transport options for all colleagues, even when cycling is not an option. For example, there is an attractive offer for an electric private lease car, shared cars and department cars are available and colleagues who travel with their own car receive €0.23 net per kilometre.
