IIJ to introduce eSims in October
Internet Initiative Japan Inc., one of Japan’s leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, announced plans to begin offering eSIM with voice call function on its MVNO services for individual customers beginning October 25, 2022. In addition, IIJ will introduce eKYC (online know your customer) along with the launch of Voice eSIMs. iij esim
eSIMs are embedded SIMs for smartphones and other devices that allow users to remotely download the profiles needed to use telecom services (SIM profiles). Without having to insert the physical SIM card to devices, users can readily start using the telecom services just by downloading profiles to their eSIM-compatible devices.
While it takes a minimum of three to four days for conventional physical SIMs to reach users and enable telecom services if the applications for SIMs with voice call function were sent through the IIJmio website, Voice eSIMs will allow users to use telecom services on the day of application at the earliest because they require no delivery of SIM cards and identity verification procedures are completed online with the eKYC that has been introduced. For reference, IIJ employs “LIQUID eKYC” offered by Liquid, Inc. for the eKYC.
Recently, with increasing demand to use several SIMs on a single device for purposes such as saving communication charges and backup in case of communication failure, the usefulness of eSIMs, for which contract procedures can be completed easily in a short period of time, is attracting renewed interest. IIJ has been offering eSIMs dedicated to data transmission service and will start offering Voice eSIMs in response to the strong demand for voice calls as a backup line. Simultaneous use is available by combining Voice eSIMs for Type A (au network) and conventional physical Voice SIMs for type D (NTT DOCOMO network). iij esim
