First 5G standalone roaming connection between Europe and Southeast Asia
Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, Sunrise and AIS Thailand have for the first time successfully established an intercontinental 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection between two networks in Europe and Southeast Asia. Partners connected in a lab environment using live SIMs and devices. They also successfully switched between the respective 5G SA networks of Sunrise and AIS Thailand. The achievement is a significant milestone on the road to the global rollout of 5G SA services. 5G standalone roaming Europe Southeast Asia
Direct SEPP-to-SEPP (Security Edge Protection Proxy) connectivity establishment between the home and the visited network was performed via GSMA’s SEPP protocol. SEPP enables a secure connection between 5G networks. It ensures the end-to-end confidentiality of all 5G interconnect roaming messages between the origin and destination networks. SEPP also follows the 5G SA roaming security design in the 3GPP standard.
Nicholas Nikrouyan, Vice President, Voice & Mobile Solutions, Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, said: “We aim to accelerate the innovation drive during the current 5G transformation. Active partnerships promote our common goal of mastering this technology faster. Our recent success in creating a 5G SA roaming connection together with Sunrise and AIS Thailand paves the way for further developments. 5G SA will enable a variety of innovative telco offerings for consumers and businesses. SEPP can be efficiently hosted on our IPX network if operators wish to outsource implementation and management.”
Robert Redeleanu, Chief Business Officer, Sunrise commented: “We are proud to have established the 5G SA roaming connection between our network and that of AIS Thailand. Together with Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, we look forward to translating this success into super-fast and reliable 5G SA connectivity services for our residential and corporate customers here in Europe and around the world.”
Saran Phaloprakarn, Head of Mobile and Consumer Consumer Products Development, AIS Thailand, said: “The cooperation with Deutsche Telecom Global Carrier and Sunrise gives us the opportunity to offer our customers and partners the best and most modern digital experiences. 5G SA Roaming is an innovation for ultra-fast data transmission that efficiently supports the most diverse solutions. It will offer our customers enormous lifestyle comfort on their travels.”
The successful intercontinental 5G SA roaming connection is part of Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier’s innovative 5G roaming test bed. This enables industry partners and pioneers to examine their 5G roaming requirements in different scenarios before making strategic decisions. Four different proof-of-concept studies are currently running within the test environment in the areas of 5G signaling and security, value-added services for 5G roaming, network slicing for roaming, and regional and local breakout.
Last year, Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier also completed the first phase of its inter-carrier 5G SA Roaming PoC together with international mobile roaming specialist Comfone, as well as a low-latency data roaming connection between Germany and Spain together with Telefonica implemented. Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier aims to continue to stimulate the industry to move from passive cooperation to active cooperation in the delivery of 5G services.
