Rakuten Communications, the ICT subsidiary of the Rakuten Group, is introducing a new eSIM provisioning feature called eSIM Plan Reservation to its corporate-focused ‘Mobile Data Communication Service’, which leverages Rakuten Mobile’s communication network. Beyond offering data communication as an MVNO, Rakuten Communications also acts as an MVNE, helping MVNOs deploy services.

In November 2024, Rakuten Mobile began offering eSIMs and provided multiple eSIM issuance methods, enabling SIM provisioning tailored to diverse MVNO sales models.

This newly introduced feature issues an ID/PASS linked to a data plan in advance, allowing end users to directly receive profiles for activation. Until the eSIM is activated via a dedicated web portal where users input their ID/PASS, MVNOs incur no procurement or maintenance costs. This eliminates stock risks while expanding sales channels, according to the company. Furthermore, it facilitates an easy-to-use environment for data communication, especially for inbound travellers visiting Japan.

Other features include IDs and passwords tied to data plans that are issued in advance and distributed by MVNOs to sales points. End users access the portal, input their ID/PASS, and begin using data communication. Since no procurement or maintenance costs are incurred until the eSIM is activated, this helps reduce inventory-related risks for MVNOs. By addressing stock risks, the feature supports the development of new sales channels, enabling MVNOs to offer activation-ready ID/PASS in prepaid card formats at locations like hotel receptions or convenience stores.

In addition, enhancements such as the ‘email delivery’ function for profile distribution and English support for the portal have also been implemented. This includes bulk email delivery to multiple end-user addresses and customization of sender addresses and content.
