EMOSIM and Tata Communications Launch Nigeria’s First Travel eSIM
EMOSIM, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) backed by EMO MEDIA Ltd, has partnered with Tata Communications to introduce Nigeria ‘s first travel eSIM, targeting outbound travelers. Scheduled for rollout in Q2 2025, this eSIM aims to provide Nigerian travelers with affordable global data access without incurring traditional roaming charges.
They are targeting Nigeria’s 1.2 million outbound travelers who frequently visit destinations like the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada.
This marks another significant collaboration between Nigeria and India in the digital economy space. The last high-profile engagement was at the G20 Summit in India, where Nigerian officials met with Indian tech leaders to explore digital skills development, technology transfer, and business partnerships. Now, with Tata Communications entering Nigeria’s telecom space through EMOSIM, this partnership aligns with the Nigerian government’s broader digital transformation goals.
The eSIM is marketed as a better alternative to traditional roaming solutions in terms of lighter data charges and, notably, tailored for travelers.
eSIM technology growth and Emosim eSIM Nigeria
The demand for eSIM technology is growing rapidly—GSMA predicts that by 2028, half of all smartphone connections will be eSIM-enabled. Players like Airalo and Ubigi already dominate the global eSIM market, but EMOSIM promises to localize the experience for Nigerian users.
CEO Karn Gulati, who previously held leadership roles at 9Mobile and Ernst & Young, emphasized that MVNOs were introduced to serve underserved markets, ensuring that Nigeria’s smartphone revolution leaves no one behind.
The partnership with Tata Communications utilizes its cloud-based IT platform for digital onboarding and real-time customer engagement. This will ensure a seamless traveler experience, enabling one to activate and manage their eSIMs digitally, as the concept of eSIMs does not require a physical SIM card.
EMO Group Chairman Jimmy Eboma highlighted that this initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader digitization efforts.
“MVNOs like EMOSIM act as catalysts to increase technology access and drive prosperity,” he stated.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been actively shaping MVNO regulations to ensure fair competition and prevent anti-competitive practices in the telecom market. With MTN recently hiking its prices in Nigeria, Starlink and emerging MVNOs like EMOSIM are positioning themselves as cost-effective alternatives.
With the last month in Q1 already here, the travel eSIM launch is not far off. As more Nigerians look for cost-effective, borderless connectivity, EMOSIM’s entry could be a major milestone in how travelers stay connected globally.
