Deutsche Telekom sees 26% jump in mobile data traffic at Oktoberfest

During the Oktoberfest, more than 266,000 gigabytes of data were transmitted on Telekom’s mobile network on the Theresienwiese. That’s around 26 percent more than last year. Back then, the festival even lasted two days longer. Deutsche Telekom Oktoberfest mobile data traffic

The 5G mobile communications standard plays a central role in the transmission. Around 40 percent of Telekom’s “Wiesn network” data is processed using the latest mobile communications standard. This takes the customer experience to a new level. Data or call interruptions are now largely a thing of the past. Even streaming football games is now possible without any problems at the Oktoberfest. For example, FC Bayern’s games against Leverkusen (September 28th) and Frankfurt (October 6th) led to significant peaks in data transmission.

Nevertheless, the network remained stable at all times. Telekom used 5G at the Oktoberfest for the third time this year, offering download speeds of over 1 gigabit per second. Major events such as folk festivals, concerts, and sporting events are now hardly imaginable without 5G.

Social apps

There was no clear Wiesn hit this year. When it came to social apps, however, there was a clear winner in the Telekom network. Instagram was by far the most used app at the Wiesn, followed by WhatsApp, Snapchat, Facebook and Tiktok. Deutsche Telekom Oktoberfest mobile data traffic

Guest list

Foreign guests account for around a third of the data traffic in Telekom’s Wiesn network. Guests from the USA came first, followed by visitors from Austria and Italy. Italy was only able to briefly push itself into first place in the rankings on the second Wiesn weekend, the so-called “Italian weekend”.

Special care

Every year, Telekom sets up a special supply for the Oktoberfest. Ten cell phone masts and four locations in beer tents supplied the guests at the Theresienwiese. The locations are dismantled after the Oktoberfest and stored near Munich so that the setup can run smoothly again next year.

Landline

And Telekom’s landline also played an important role at the Oktoberfest. Telekom provided almost 200 landline connections for the showmen and festival hosts on the Theresienwiese so that logistics ran smoothly. For this purpose, the festival grounds are equipped with an underground cable network.
