Drei Austria starts to operate full 5G mobile network in Vienna

A few months after the European premiere of Pre5G and further 5G tests at Vienna’s Rathausplatz, digitalization city councilor Peter Hanke and three CEO Jan Trionow have put into operation the first real 5G network in the federal capital.

“As the first urban areas in Vienna, we now supply Seestadt Aspern and parts of Floridsdorf with the fifth-generation mobile network, so that annoying congestion on the data highway will be a thing of the past, even in densely populated urban areas in rush hour,” explained Drei CEO Jan Trionow at a press conference.

Vienna as the Digitization Capital of Europe – this is the goal Michael Mayroth announced last November on the occasion of the start of the test run for 5G at the Rathausplatz in Vienna. “With today’s historic day, we are coming closer to this goal again,” said City Councilor Peter Hanke . “I am pleased that Drei Wien has upgraded to one of the first 5G cities in Europe today, and to be faster than other cities in the introduction of 5G gives us a real start-up advantage in international location competition”, says Hanke.

Hardly anywhere else in the world is the mobile Internet as widespread as in Vienna. More than half a million Viennese households already have a private Internet connection via mobile network. Drei is the mobile communications provider with by far the largest number of private customers in Vienna and at the same time Austria’s market leader in the mobile Internet. In the first half of 2019 alone, 400,000 gigabytes of electricity flowed through the network of three, and the trend continues to increase. “With 5G we are continuing on this path and will offer Austrian households and companies even faster and stronger Internet in the future – with even more network capacity and minimum reaction times,” emphasized Trionow.

Vienna is already the fourth region in Austria that has equipped the company with 5G. In June, Drei put into operation in Linz the first real, contiguous 5G network in Austria, followed by the 5G starts in August in the digital flagship region of Wörthersee and in Wörgl, the economic and commercial center of the Tyrolean Unterland.
