With the help of technology, the possibility of high-quality voice calls and, on suitable devices, the possibility of sending SMS is also available in buildings and interior rooms where the outdoor mobile signal is already weak or does not even reach there. Telephones are the local wireless internet (Wi-Fi) network that can be used to connect to the mobile network, ensuring full coverage within the WiFi range within the building.

Hungary’s mobile networks are at the forefront of the world, but due to the technology and the characteristics of the propagation of mobile radio signals, it happens that the mobile radio signal from the base station reaches the interior of thick-walled buildings, the depths of metal buildings, or underground rooms, or it is not possible to reach them. Yettel’s free service, VoWiFi, helps with this. It connects to the local WiFi network as the first step of the indoor mobile connection, and from there it connects to the provider’s mobile network, thereby significantly increasing deep indoor network coverage. When the service was launched in March, it was initially available to business subscribers of the mobile company, but from now on, Yettel VoWifi is also available to a wider audience, including residential subscribers.

Two steps and the service is available Yettel Hungary Free VoWiFi

For a given subscriber to be able to use the VoWifi technology, he only needs to send a free SMS with the keyword “VOWIFI” to the phone number 1744. This step activates the service on the network side. As a second step, the service can be activated on a VoWiFi-capable mobile device after a quick menu setting. After that, in case of a weak or missing mobile network signal, the device automatically initiates and receives incoming calls and handles SMS traffic via the connected WiFi connection.

“We are amid a network development investment worth tens of billions of forints, which not only increased the capacity of the nationally available 4G network to 2-3x the previous one but also paved the way for the spread of 5G, which we currently provide to our customers on more than 700 base stations. Thanks to this comprehensive modernization, in addition to increasingly advanced mobile internet access, we can also offer new capabilities to our customers, so the VoWiFi service can now be enjoyed by all our business and residential subscribers, said György Koller, Technical Deputy General Manager of Yettel.

VoWiFi fully cooperates with the traditional mobile network. Both VoLTE and VoWiFi are provided by the mobile network (4G-based), and VoWiFi can provide excellent voice quality, and the transition between technologies is smooth even during a call. During a phone call, in the event of a change of location, the system automatically switches to the available, or, if both technologies are available, preferred, switches to a network, leaving the Wi-Fi range, and the call can be continued without interruption via VoLTE, and vice versa, VoWifi takes over the ongoing VoLTE call smoothly.

Among VoWifi-capable devices on Yettel’s network, the service is currently supported by Samsung devices released after the last quarter of 2022 and devices running Apple’s iOS17 operating system, and it will soon be available on newer Xiaomi, Nokia, Huawei, and Honor devices as well. 70 percent of the new mobile devices in Yettel’s range are already VoWifi-capable, and this proportion will continue to increase in the future.
